A high resolution compact all-fiber spectrometer based on periodic refractive index modulation

Hongzhou Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a compact all-fiber speckle spectrometer was constructed using cascading coreless fibers and photonic crystal fibers, achieving high resolution performance. The proposed fiber structure generates more guided modes and forms speckle patterns through modal interferences. With a 10 cm-long fiber, a resolution of 0.03 nm over a bandwidth from 1540 to 1560 nm was achieved. The performance of this spectrometer surpasses that of a 2 m multimode fiber spectrometer and is approximately 20 times higher than that of the same length multimode fiber.

High-efficiency multi-port beam control device based on periodic nanodisk arrays

Zhisen Huang et al.

Summary: This article proposes a multi-port two-dimensional reflective grating based on a nanodisk array, which can achieve high-efficiency optical control. The combination of the finite element method and the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method provides effective optimization and analysis for the grating. The four-port and five-port grating beam splitters both demonstrate high efficiency and uniformity, with advantages in practical applications.

High-performance refractive index sensor by nano-cylindrical surface structure

Zhisen Huang et al.

Summary: In this work, a two-dimensional grating structure based on the metal assisted guided-mode resonance (MAGMR) effect is proposed for near infrared band sensing in an aqueous environment. The structure is optimized by the finite-difference time-domain method to support MAGMR and achieve excellent reflection dip. The electromagnetic field analysis shows that the structure has good interaction with the sensing medium and a large penetration depth. Experimental results confirm the high sensing performance of the MAGMR sensor at different refractive indices, achieving a sensitivity of 852 nm/RIU. The sensor also has a high figure of merit due to its small full width at half maximum. The shape and parameters of the MAGMR sensor have been analyzed in detail for a comprehensive understanding of its performance. With its polarization-independent, non-specific angle of incidence, high penetration depth, and high sensing performance, this MAGMR sensor shows promising applications in biomedicine, chemical measurements, and environmental monitoring.

High Performance of a Metal Layer-Assisted Guided-Mode Resonance Biosensor Modulated by Double-Grating

Chengrui Zhang et al.

Summary: Guided-mode resonance (GMR) sensors are widely used in biosensing due to their simple structure, easy detection schemes, high efficiency, and narrow linewidth. However, their applications are limited by their relatively low sensitivity and figure of merit. By introducing a metal layer-assisted double-grating (MADG) structure, both sensitivity and figure of merit can be enhanced simultaneously for more sensitive sensing.

Zhendong Yan et al.

Summary: By placing the 3D metamaterial of Au VSRRs directly onto the Au substrate, ultra-narrow dual-band perfect absorption in the visible range for high-sensitivity sensing can be achieved. The proposed 3D metamaterial exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity and figure of merit in the near-infrared regime, holding potential applications in label-free biosensing.

All-epitaxial guided-mode resonance mid-wave infrared detectors

A. Kamboj et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates all-epitaxial guided-mode resonance mid-wave infrared type-II superlattice nBn photodetectors, showing polarization- and angle-dependent detector response with strongly enhanced absorption. The detectors exhibit high operating temperature external quantum efficiencies over 50% at 200K for TE-polarized light with a thin absorber layer. The calculated specific detectivity on resonance at T = 200K is comparable with state-of-the-art MWIR detectors.

Hollow metal island films as plasmonic sensors produced by galvanic replacement

Ivana Fabijanic et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the formation of hollow nanoparticle layers using metal island films as templates, where the morphology and plasmonic properties of the islands gradually change with the increase of titration solution concentration. The hollow island films obtained with large titration concentration show a significant enhancement in refractive index sensitivity factor and figure of merit compared to untreated samples, showing promise for cost-effective fabrication of plasmonic sensors.
