Transcranial ultrasound simulations: A review

Celestine Angla et al.

Summary: Transcranial ultrasound is increasingly utilized in brain therapy and imaging. However, the skull presents challenges as it attenuates and distorts ultrasound waves, and its structure and acoustic properties vary across samples and even within the same sample. To ensure safe transcranial focused ultrasound interventions, case-specific simulations are necessary. In this article, we review the different methods used to model the skull and simulate ultrasound propagation through it.

Physics-informed neural networks for transcranial ultrasound wave propagation

Linfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper explores the use of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) for predicting the transcranial ultrasound wave propagation. By embedding the wave equation, time snapshots data, and boundary conditions in the loss function during training, PINNs can flexibly apply to different wave equations and boundary conditions. By adding physics constraints to the loss function, PINNs can predict wavefields far outside the training data, providing ideas for improving the generalization capability of existing deep learning methods.

Experimental Demonstration of Trans-Skull Volumetric Passive Acoustic Mapping With the Heterogeneous Angular Spectrum Approach

Scott Schoen et al.

Summary: Real-time, 3-D, passive acoustic mapping of microbubble dynamics during transcranial focused ultrasound is crucial for optimal treatment outcomes. The angular spectrum approach offers an efficient method to perform this mapping, reconstructing specific frequency bands pertinent to the dynamics and correcting aberrations caused by the skull. Experimental assessment shows that the heterogeneous angular spectrum approach can effectively reduce localization errors and spurious lobes caused by aberration, with additional computational expense. Registration errors and skull properties also affect the accuracy, but to a lesser extent. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of the heterogeneous angular spectrum approach for imaging and controlling microbubble dynamics in the brain.

Stable and efficient FEM-BEM coupling with OSRC regularisation for acoustic wave transmission

Elwin van 't Wout

Summary: The finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) can numerically solve the Helmholtz system for acoustic wave propagation. The coupled FEM-BEM algorithm combines the strengths of each technique, handling heterogeneous regions with FEM and modeling homogeneous exterior with BEM. This study proposes a regulariser based on the on-surface radiation conditions to improve the convergence of iterative linear solvers significantly.

Acoustic properties across the human skull

Thomas S. Riis et al.

Summary: The study characterized the impact of different anatomical segments of the skull on transcranial ultrasound propagation. Parietal bone showed higher transmission and smaller phase distortion compared to frontal and occipital bone regions. Across skull regions, transmission was strongly anti-correlated with skull thickness, while phase distortion was correlated with it.

Summary: Computational models of acoustic wave propagation are commonly used in transcranial ultrasound therapy. To facilitate intercomparison between different modeling tools and techniques, an international working group formulated a set of numerical benchmarks. The results showed good agreement among the models, particularly in terms of the acoustic focus within the skull. The benchmark definitions, model results, and intercomparison codes are freely available for further comparisons.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the ultrasound wave propagation and energy distribution within brain tissues using customized single element focused ultrasound transducers (SEFT) targeting the hippocampus. The study found that ultrasound neuromodulation targeting the deep brain tissue of the hippocampus can be a potential alternative method to non-acoustic brain stimulation modalities.
