State-owned Enterprises in the global market: Varieties of government control and internationalization strategies

Stefano Clo et al.

Summary: We examine the internationalization of State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the 21st century and its underlying drivers at the firm-level and country-level. By using a global database of over 110,000 M&A deals, we empirically analyze the differences between private enterprises, traditional SOEs, and reformed SOEs. Our results indicate that the degree of government control is associated with divergent targeting strategies and internationalization patterns. Reform SOEs, compared to traditional ones, have a stronger outward orientation, tend to acquire better performing targets, focus their investments on less risky countries that are closer geographically and culturally, have better institutional quality, and a more central role in the trade network. These findings suggest that reformed SOEs are adopting more market-oriented strategies, differentiating themselves from traditional SOEs and moving towards the private enterprise model.

Digital transformation: The role of computer use in employee health

Katharina Dengler et al.

Summary: This paper examines employee health in the context of digital transformation in Germany, focusing on physical health instead of mental health. The findings suggest that frequent computer use in the workplace is associated with better subjective health and a lower prevalence of back pain and physical exhaustion. However, after taking into account physical work exposures, the health-promoting effect of computer use diminishes, indicating that high computer use is linked to less physically demanding work environments and better physical health outcomes. While digital transformation appears to enhance physical health, there are indications of potential deterioration in mental health, thus calling for a shift in occupational health towards preventing mental stress.
