Effect of Water Vapor on Oxidation Processes of the Cu(111) Surface and Sublayer

Young Jae Kim et al.

Summary: The catalytic properties of copper-based catalysts depend on the oxidation states of Cu. This study utilized near-ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (NAP-STM) and near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) to observe the oxidation processes of Cu(111) in real time. Dry oxidation started at the step edges and proceeded to the terraces as a Cu2O phase, while humid oxidation showed Cu2O generation at upper steps. The difference in oxidation mechanisms was attributed to the presence of water molecules.

In-situ imaging of the electrode surface during electrochemical reactions with a beetle-type electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope

Summary: This paper presents the design and performances of a beetle-type electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope (EC-STM) that allows horizontal tip motion at a millimeter range. The symmetrical scanner design of the beetle-type EC-STM reduces thermal drift and enables operation in various chemical reactions. Atom-resolved high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope images of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and Au(111) surfaces in the liquid phase demonstrate the scan performance of the beetle-type EC-STM, which also provides real-time information on the electrode surface during electrochemical reactions.

Dynamic chemical processes on ZnO surfaces tuned by physisorption under ambient conditions

Yunjian Ling et al.

Summary: This study investigated the activation of CO and CO2 on ZnO surfaces, a typical non-reducible oxide and a major catalytic material, using ambient-pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (AP-STM), AP X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that enhanced physisorption and the concerted interaction of physisorbed molecules led to the formation of new adsorbate structures, facilitating the activation of CO and CO2 on ZnO. The study provided molecular insights into the fundamental chemistry and catalytic properties of ZnO surfaces under realistic reaction conditions.

Summary: The Co(10(1) over bar 15) surface, a vicinal surface of Co(0001), exhibits higher activity compared to the Co(0001) surface, showing that atomic steps are the active sites. This suggests that the Co(10(1) over bar 15) surface can serve as a model system bridging the materials gap between single crystals and supported catalysts, with activities comparable to supported Co catalysts reported in literature data.

The cobalt oxidation state in preferential CO oxidation on CoOx/Pt(111) investigated by operando X-ray photoemission spectroscopy

Eoghan Rattigan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the active phase and adsorbed species at the CoOx/Pt(111) interface in CO and O-2 atmospheres using ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy and ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It reveals that the transformation from planar CoO to a mixed Co2+/Co3+ phase is the active state for CO oxidation, and the variation of the active phase formation is influenced by the pressure of H-2 gas. The study emphasizes the importance of the reducibility window of cobalt oxide and the bonding strength of CO to the reduced oxide phase for the activity of the system.
