Enhanced corrosion resistance of 17-4 PH stainless steel fabricated by laser powder bed fusion in H2SO4 solution

Mohammadreza Tavakoli Shoushtari et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to examine the microstructure and corrosion performance of martensitic stainless steel 17-4 PH produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and its corresponding rod specimen in sulfuric acid. The study found that the LPBF alloy had an ultrafine cellular structure and uniform distribution of elements, and exhibited improved corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of high-efficiency laser-directed energy deposited 15-5PH stainless steel

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: The microstructural and mechanical characteristics of 15-5 precipitation hardening stainless steel fabricated by laser-directed energy deposition were thoroughly investigated. The study revealed that the high-power LDEDed stainless steel mainly consisted of lath martensite, skeletal 6-ferrite, retained austenite, and NbC carbides. The formation mechanism of 6-ferrite was proposed to be due to the combined effects of Cr element segregation and rapid cooling during the LDED process. Additionally, the presence of 6-ferrite resulted in the precipitation of two-scale Cu-rich precipitates after direct aging treatment. The coarsening of Cu-rich precipitates in 6-ferrite was attributed to the surrounding Cu and Ni-depleted conditions. The low original microhardness of 6-ferrite and the coarsening of precipitates led to a significant drop in the yielding and tensile strength of the high-efficiency LDEDed stainless steel.

Correlation between the microstructure and hydrogen embrittlement resistance in a precipitation-hardened martensitic stainless steel

Zhe Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that Custom 465 precipitation-hardened stainless steel exhibited superior resistance to hydrogen embrittlement after cryogenic treatment and thermal aging, with prolonged aging time further reducing hydrogen susceptibility. The fracture behavior was primarily influenced by hydrogen-induced subcritical cracks initiated on the sample surface and reduced hydrogen susceptibility due to the absence or ripening of eta-Ni3Ti.

Evaluation of the corrosion performance of selective laser melted 17-4 precipitation hardening stainless steel in Ringer's solution

Mahdi Yeganeh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the microstructure and corrosion resistance of selective laser-melted 17-4 precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel in comparison to wrought specimens. The results showed that the SLM process improved corrosion behavior and exhibited fine cellular/columnar microstructure. The improved electrochemical behavior of the SLMed alloy is attributed to reduced nonuniform distribution of alloying elements during solidification and lower anode/cathode area ratio compared to the wrought alloy.

Effect of microstructure on corrosion behavior of high strength martensite steel-A literature review

Li Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of microstructure on the corrosion behavior of high strength martensite steels, including pitting and intergranular corrosion. Factors such as precipitation, dislocation, and grain/lath boundaries are discussed as crack nucleation and hydrogen traps in these steels. Additionally, the beneficial effects of retained/reversed austenite on corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking sensitivity are explored, as well as ideas for designing new high strength martensite steels.

Summary: The Ni enriched reversed austenite in tempered steel increases the corrosion film stability, while Mo-rich intermetallic compounds reduce the protective properties of the corrosion film. The quenched steel without Mo-rich intermetallic compounds shows the highest corrosion resistance.

Cu precipitation-me diate d formation of reverted austenite during ageing of a 15-5 PH stainless steel

Tao Zhou et al.

Summary: During ageing treatment of a 15-5 PH stainless steel, Cu precipitation-mediated austenitic transformation is revealed to occur through the pathway of Cu precipitation at the martensite/retained austenite interfaces or at martensite lath boundaries, followed by partitioning of austenite stabilizing elements towards interfaces of the Cu precipitates and reverted austenite formation.
