Infant Low Birth Weight Prediction Using Graph Embedding Features

Wasif Khan et al.

Summary: Low birth weight (LBW) infants are a serious global public health concern. Predicting infant weight before birth can help identify risk factors and reduce morbidity and mortality. Existing machine learning algorithms for LBW prediction have shown good performance but need improvement for use in real-world clinical settings. To address this, we propose transforming tabular data into a knowledge graph to capture structural information and improve classification performance. Our method achieved the best performance on a real-life dataset, with a 6% improvement in the area under the curve compared to using the original risk factors. We also highlight the clinical relevance of our proposed model for its adaptation in clinical settings.

Detecting geographical clusters of low birth weight and/or preterm birth in Japan

Md. Obaidur Rahman et al.

Summary: The average birth weight in Japan has decreased significantly over the past thirty years, while the prevalence of preterm birth has increased. However, the geographic differences in low birthweight and/or preterm birth in Japan are not well understood. This study used spatial analysis to identify clusters and hot spots of low birthweight and/or preterm birth, and found that the most likely hot spot areas were located in the small islands in southwest Japan and the cities nearby Mt. Fuji.

Infant birth weight estimation and low birth weight classification in United Arab Emirates using machine learning algorithms

Wasif Khan et al.

Summary: Accurate prediction of newborn birth weight is crucial for evaluating their health and safety. This study provides a detailed approach for weight estimation and low birth weight classification. Multiple subsets of features and feature selection techniques were used, along with synthetic minority oversampling, to improve classification performance. The results demonstrate that the Random Forest algorithm performs best for weight estimation, while Logistic Regression with SMOTE oversampling achieves the best performance in low birth weight classification.

A Machine Learning-Based Prediction Model for Preterm Birth in Rural India

Rakesh Raja et al.

Summary: This study focuses on designing a machine learning model called the Risk Prediction Conceptual Model (RPCM) for predicting preterm birth (PTB) using data collected from rural areas in Kamdara, India. A feature selection approach based on entropy is applied, with three different classifiers - decision tree (DT), logistic regression (LR), and support vector machine (SVM) - used for PTB prediction. The SVM classifier achieves an accuracy of 90.9%, higher than other classifiers in this study.
