Programmable polymer materials empowered by DNA nanotechnology

Sarah K. Speed et al.

Summary: Over the past century, synthetic polymers have been widely used but still lack the complex structure and function of biological matter. The development of DNA nanotechnology has shown that synthetic DNA molecules can be programmed for predictable self-assembly, providing better control over artificial nanostructures. Applying the principles of DNA nanotechnology to programmable soft materials brings synthetic polymers closer to biological materials. This perspective discusses the unique features of DNA-functionalized polymer materials, including design principles and potential applications in cell culture and nucleic acid sequencing.

Exploring inverse vulcanisation mechanisms from the perspective of dark sulfur

Joseph J. Dale et al.

Summary: The build-up of elemental sulfur waste poses problems that require advancements in process and product design as solutions. Inverse vulcanisation, a process for generating high sulfur content polymeric materials, holds promise as a potential solution. However, a complete understanding of the formation of these materials is still lacking in this emerging field. This research investigates the formation mechanisms of 'dark sulfur' in order to further understand inverse vulcanisation. The detriments and benefits of dark sulfur in relation to its application and general usage are also explored.

Composite hydrogels based on calcium alginate and polyethyleneimine for wastewater treatment

Johannes Berg et al.

Summary: Water shortage is a global challenge due to limited accessible water resources and contamination, and excessive sludge production from the activated sludge process worsens the environmental problem. This study focuses on the synthesis of biobased alginate hydrogel beads and polyethyleneimine-modified composite hydrogels for water treatment. The adsorption capacities of positively charged methylene blue and negatively charged congo red dyes, both separately and together, as well as their pH-dependent adsorption, are investigated. Alginate-based hydrogel systems offer bio-based, inexpensive, sustainable, and widely applicable solutions for wastewater treatment.

Inverse Vulcanization of Norbornenylsilanes: Soluble Polymers with Controllable Molecular Properties via Siloxane Bonds

Johannes M. Scheiger et al.

Summary: Inverse vulcanization is used to produce high sulfur content polymers, but control over polymer properties is not well established. In this study, the inverse vulcanization of norbornenylsilanes is reported, allowing for control over properties such as molecular weight, solubility, and glass transition temperature. Polycondensation in the melt with HCl as a catalyst and purification by precipitation leads to polymers with reduced low molar mass species.
