Summary: Recent advances in microdroplet chemistry have shown that chemical reactions in water microdroplets can be greatly accelerated compared to bulk water. One intriguing property of microdroplets is their high reducing power due to the presence of generated electrons. In this study, researchers successfully utilized the reducing ability of water microdroplets to convert CO2 into value-added products, showcasing the potential for microdroplet chemistry in CO2 utilization.

Summary: Freshman chemistry teaches that Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions are stable in water solutions, but their reduced forms, Fe2+ and Cu+, cannot exist in water as the major oxidation state due to the fast oxidation by O2 and/or disproportionation. However, significant fractions of dissolved Fe and Cu species exist in their reduced oxidation states in atmospheric water such as deliquesced aerosols, clouds, and fog droplets. By spraying the water solutions of transition metal ions into microdroplets, the study shows the spontaneous reduction of ligated Fe(III) and Cu(II) species into Fe(II) and Cu(I) species, suggesting a previously unknown source of reduced transition metal ions in atmospheric water.

Summary: The formation of H2O2 in sprayed water is not well understood. It is believed to involve the association of HO center dot radicals generated from HO- ions by electric fields on microdroplet surfaces. Charged microdroplets with excess OH- or H+ ions are created during spraying, and electron transfer occurs between these surface-bound ions to form H2O2. The energy supplied for spraying water and restricted hydration on microdroplet surfaces drive the formation of H2O2.

Summary: Water microdroplets containing ammonia are synthesized in a gas-liquid-solid heterogeneous catalytic system without the need for electric potential or irradiation. The conversion rate reaches 32.9 ± 1.38 nmol s(-1) cm(-2) at room temperature. This eco-friendly and low-cost one-step nitrogen-fixation strategy converts widely available starting materials into a value-added product.

Summary: By spraying bulk water into microsized droplets, these water microdroplets exhibit various unique properties, such as accelerating chemical reactions and triggering spontaneous reactions that cannot occur in bulk water. The high electric field at the air-water interface of microdroplets is believed to be the cause of these unique chemistries. The redox reactions on sprayed water microdroplets are essentially processes using electrons as the charge carriers.

Summary: Reaction rates of common organic reactions can significantly increase by several orders of magnitude in aqueous microdroplets compared to bulk solution. However, the reasons for this rate acceleration are still poorly understood. By studying the electric field distributions at the air-water interface, it has been found that the electric field alignments along free O-H bonds at the surface are on average around 16 MV/cm larger than those in the interior of the water droplet. This difference in electric field distribution may contribute to the enhanced surface reactivity observed in microdroplets.

Summary: Despite the high stability of bulk water, microdroplets exhibit different properties, such as the presence of hydroxyl radicals at the air-water interface. In this study, OH· was detected as (H4O2)+, a hydroxyl radical combined with a hydronium cation, and successfully captured with caffeine and melatonin. Key oxidation radical intermediates were observed, providing important mechanistic information.

Summary: Contact electrification between water and a solid surface leads to the spontaneous production of H2O2 from hydroxyl groups on the surface. The density of hydroxyl groups affects the yield of H2O2. Mass spectrometry confirms the involvement of hydroxyl groups in the generation of H2O2. A model based on the recombination of hydroxyl radicals from surface hydroxyl groups is proposed. The generation of H2O2 is found to be universal on soil and atmospheric fine particle surfaces in a humid environment.
