Quantification of Water Resource Sustainability in Response to Drought Risk Assessment for Afghanistan River Basins

Rahmatullah Dost et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impacts of drought on water resources sustainability in Afghanistan and analyzes the variation in precipitation and sustainability across different regions. The results indicate a positive trend of precipitation in most areas, but a decrease in sustainability of around 15% in the upstream of the Kabul River basin. Therefore, effective water resource management is crucial for Kabul city.

Flood susceptibility mapping in an arid region of Pakistan through ensemble machine learning model

Andaleeb Yaseen et al.

Summary: This study developed a susceptibility map for floods in Karachi using a new ensemble model LR-SVM-MLP and evaluated the influencing factors. Results showed that the proposed ensemble model outperformed other models and can contribute to future research studies in flood management and government.

Observed changes in seasonal drought characteristics and their possible potential drivers over Pakistan

Irfan Ullah et al.

Summary: Long-term drought monitoring and assessment are crucial for meteorological disaster risk management. This study investigated spatiotemporal changes in drought characteristics over Pakistan and explored the role of large-scale circulation and climate variability in drought occurrences. The findings suggest an increase in drought severity in arid regions, with temperature and rainfall playing significant roles in defining drought patterns. Influential factors include Nino4, sea surface temperature, and the multivariate ENSO4.0 Index.

Changes in monsoon precipitation patterns over Bangladesh and its teleconnections with global climate

Md. Abul Kalam Azad et al.

Summary: Understanding changes in monsoon precipitation patterns is essential for addressing floods and droughts in Bangladesh. This study investigates the changes in monsoon precipitation patterns and their connection with large-scale atmospheric oscillations in Bangladesh. The results show a significant decrease in light and moderate precipitation indices and an increase in heavy precipitation indices. The study also reveals a correlation between monsoon precipitation indices and atmospheric circulation indices. Further analysis suggests that changes in sea surface temperature, temperature, geopotential height, precipitation rate, and moisture divergence play a role in driving monsoon precipitation changes.

Changingspatio-temporaltrends of heat wave and severe heat wave events over India: An emerging health hazard

Saumya Singh et al.

Summary: The study reveals a spatio-temporal shift in the occurrence of heat wave events in India, with significant increasing trends in some regions while decreasing trends in others. Severe heat wave events showed a southward expansion and spatial surge during the 2001-2010 and 2010-2016 decades. Post the 1980s, there has been an increase in the number of heat wave and severe heat wave events every decade.

Projected Drought Conditions over Southern Slope of the Central Himalaya Using CMIP6 Models

Shankar Sharma et al.

Summary: Nepal is expected to face increasing duration and severity of droughts, especially under higher emission scenarios. The study reveals that drought frequency will increase in the early future and decrease in the late future under all shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP), with more prolonged and severe droughts projected under SSP585 compared to SSP126 and SSP245. The findings of this study can provide valuable insights for drought mitigation and long-term adaptation strategies in Nepal.

Effects of climate change on spatiotemporal patterns of tropical cyclone tracks and their implications for coastal agriculture in Myanmar

Akira Hirano

Summary: Understanding the effects of climate change on tropical cyclones involves examining the frequency of TCs and their tracking patterns. Rising sea levels and storm surges associated with TCs pose increasing threats to coastal areas, including rice-producing regions. Analysis of TC tracks in Myanmar from 1983 to 2012 revealed notable changes along the central to southern coasts, particularly near the Ayeyarwady Delta coast. This significant increase in TC experiences in the major rice-producing coastal region raises concerns about future agricultural sustainability amid global warming.

Max Callaghan et al.

Summary: The study utilizes a machine-learning approach to examine the impacts of climate change on human and natural systems, revealing increasing evidence of observed global climate change impacts. Results show that robust levels of evidence for potentially attributable impacts are twice as prevalent in high-income countries compared to low-income countries.

Evaluation of IMERG data in Bangladesh and surrounding regions and their application to studying diurnal variation of precipitation

Tanvir Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the IMERG data in Bangladesh and surrounding regions and examined the diurnal variation of precipitation using the CSEOF analysis method. The IMERG data captured the overall patterns of diurnal precipitation variation, with some overestimation in the pre-monsoon season. CSEOF analysis revealed enhanced precipitation in the northern region of Bangladesh and the Meghalaya Plateau during the pre-monsoon season.
