A scheme for rapid evaluation of the intermolecular three-body polarization effect in water clusters

Xiao-Lei Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, a scheme based on the polarizable dipole-dipole interaction model is proposed for rapidly estimating the intermolecular many-body polarization effect in water clusters. The scheme is applied to calculate three- and four-body interaction energies, and the results are compared with those obtained from other methods. The comparison shows that the proposed scheme accurately and efficiently reproduces the interaction energies.

Liquid-liquid phase separation drug aggregate: Merit for oral delivery of amorphous solid dispersions

Peixu Zhao et al.

Summary: Amorphous solid dispersion is a promising strategy for improving the oral bioavailability of insoluble drugs. However, the stability issues of supersaturation have limited its further application. Recent research on liquid-liquid phase separation drug aggregates (LLPS-DA) has revealed their importance in maintaining supersaturation. This study presents a short review to introduce LLPS-DA, discuss its advantages for oral administration, and explore its potential in understanding in vivo behavior.

Ab-initio study on the covalent nature of hydrogen bonding in cellobiose

Sumit Mittal et al.

Summary: In this paper, the molecular interactions of cellobiose were studied using density functional theory. It was found that hydrogen bonding plays a crucial role in the dissolution of cellobiose. The study showed that the acetate ion breaks the existing intra-molecular interactions in cellobiose and forms new inter-molecular interactions. These findings have profound implications for the understanding of hydrogen bonding and dissolution of cellobiose at the molecular level.

Solvation and Ion-Pairing Effects of Choline Acetate Electrolyte in Protic and Aprotic Solvents Studied by NMR Titrations

Emmanouil Veroutis et al.

Summary: Choline-based electrolytes have been studied as low-cost and environmentally friendly alternatives for secondary zinc air batteries. Through NMR, viscosity, and density measurements in different solvents, it was found that in DMSO, a solvent-separated and solvent-shared ion pair configuration is formed, while in D2O, ion association effects are weaker. The study also showed that the extent of ion association in solvents like DMSO is not expected to significantly impact charge transport and hinder the performance of choline-based electrolytes.

Structure and pseudo-ternary phase diagram of water/Triton X-100/1-pentanol/cyclohexane microemulsion

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of water/Triton X-100/1-pentanol/cyclohexane microemulsions were determined by measuring electrical conductivity. The structure and properties of the microemulsions were analyzed using various techniques, and the phase transitions and nanostructure sizes were discussed. The type of water in W/O microemulsion was specifically analyzed.

Crystal Nucleation and Growth of Inorganic Ionic Materials from Aqueous Solution: Selected Recent Developments, and Implications

Denis Gebauer et al.

Summary: This review article highlights selected, latest theoretical and experimental advancements in the field of nucleation and crystal growth of inorganic materials from aqueous solution, with a focus on literature after 2015 and non-classical pathways. It emphasizes the underappreciated role of water and solvent entropy throughout the crystallization process. The potential of these approaches in different systems and the broader implications of re-assessing crystallization pathways are discussed, along with summarizing various techniques suitable for exploring crystallization pathways in aqueous solution and proposing a flow chart for theory selection based on experimental observations.

Revealing the role of liquid preordering in crystallisation of supercooled liquids

Yuan-Chao Hu et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of non-classical crystal nucleation pathways has revealed the role of fluctuations in the liquid structural order, not considered in classical nucleation theory. On the other hand, classical crystal growth theory states that crystal growth is independent of interfacial energy, but simulations of supercooled liquids now show that crystal-like liquid preordering play an essential role in nucleation and growth processes - calling for extensions of the classical theory.

Molecular mechanism of liquid-liquid phase separation in preparation process of crystalline materials

Yunhai Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanism of liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) before nucleation in the preparation of crystalline materials using citicoline sodium as a model compound. It was found that solute-solvent intermolecular interactions were enhanced and then weakened before and after LLPS, leading to the formation of dense liquid phase through self-assembly of solute molecules in binary mixed solvents. The proposed mechanism of LLPS was based on these results.

Mechanisms and kinetics studies of the atmospheric oxidation of eugenol by hydroxyl radicals and ozone molecules

Yanhui Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, gas phase reaction mechanisms and kinetic parameters of eugenol with hydroxyl radicals and ozone molecules were calculated. The results suggest that eugenol has a short atmospheric lifetime. This work provides theoretical guidance for the photochemical reaction mechanisms of eugenol in the atmosphere and serves as a reference for future experimental research.

Effect of doping Cr on NH3 adsorption and NO oxidation over the FexOy/AC surface: A DFT-D study

Chaoyue Xie et al.

Summary: Activated carbon supported iron-based catalysts (FexOy/AC) exhibit high deNO(x) efficiency at low temperature, with chromium (Cr) doping significantly enhancing the catalyst activity. The specific molecular-level effects of Cr doping on FexOy/AC surface remain unclear and were investigated using a DFT-D3 method in this study. Results showed that the synergistic effect of Cr-Fe bimetal improved the adsorption properties of NH3 and NO on the FexOy/AC surfaces, promoting deNO(x) reactions.

Observation of liquid-liquid phase separation of ataxin-3 and quantitative evaluation of its concentration in a single droplet using Raman microscopy

Kazuki Murakami et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the LLPS of ataxin-3 associated with Machado-Joseph disease in an intracellular crowding environment mimicked by biopolymers and proposed a label-free quantification method using Raman microscopy. It successfully identified components present inside and outside a droplet, with water and protein detected inside droplets and crowding agents remaining outside. The protein concentration in a droplet was dependent on the crowding environment, highlighting the importance of considering protein concentration and intracellular environment in investigating LLPS.

Does liquid-liquid phase separation drive peptide folding?

Dean N. Edun et al.

Summary: Proline-arginine (PR) dipeptide repeats can undergo liquid-liquid phase separation, forming membraneless organelles and potentially serving as nucleation sites for pathogenic protein aggregation. Studies have shown that increased local concentration and volumetric crowding within droplets can impact peptide secondary structure.
