Direct Oxygen-Oxygen Cleavage through Optimizing Interatomic Distances in Dual Single-atom Electrocatalysts for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Yuhan Xie et al.

Summary: We accelerate the kinetics of acid oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by using a bi-functional ligand-assisted strategy to pre-control the distance of hetero-metal atoms. The synthesized Fe-Zn diatomic pairs on carbon substrates show outstanding ORR performance with an ultrahigh half-wave potential of 0.86 V vs. RHE in acid electrolyte. The specific distance range of around 3 angstrom between Fe-Zn diatomic pairs is the key to their ultrahigh activity, averaging the interaction between hetero-diatomic active sites and oxygen molecules.

On-Surface Polymerization of In-Plane Highly Ordered Carbon Nitride Nanosheets toward Photocatalytic Mineralization of Mercaptan Gas

Fangsong Guo et al.

Summary: 2D carbon nitride nanosheets with in-plane highly ordered structure (PCNNs-IHO) are successfully prepared by on-surface polymerization of melamine on NaCl crystal surface at elevated temperatures. The NaCl crystals with relative high surface energy facilitate the adsorption and activation of melamine to undergo condensation reaction, and also function as unique substrates to orientate the assembly of 2D nanosheet structure. NaCl acts as a reactant to provide Na+ doping into carbon nitride matrix, affording PCNNs-IHO with robust structural base sites. PCNNs-IHO exhibits superior photocatalytic performance toward CH3SH mineralization under visible light irradiation.

Constructing Graphitic-Nitrogen-Bonded Pentagons in Interlayer-Expanded Graphene Matrix toward Carbon-Based Electrocatalysts for Acidic Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Shuai Liu et al.

Summary: A novel carbon-based electrocatalyst with high activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction in acidic electrolytes is reported, achieved by constructing graphitic-nitrogen-bonded pentagons to improve intrinsic activity and increase active sites. Characterizations confirm the formation of GN-bonded pentagons in the carbon material, with activity linearly associated with the amounts of pentagons and adjacent GN atoms. Density function theory demonstrates that adjacent GN atoms significantly increase the charge density at the carbon atom of a GN-bonded pentagon, which is the activity origin for the ORR.
