Hot Carrier Cooling and Trapping in Atomically Thin WS2 Probed by Three-Pulse Femtosecond Spectroscopy

Tong Wang et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have excellent semiconductor properties, making them promising materials for next-generation optoelectronic and electronic devices. Recent studies have reported the ultrafast carrier cooling rate in TMDs and the slowing effect by hot-phonon bottleneck (HPB) at high excitation densities. However, quantitative descriptions of HPB in TMDs and the effects of carrier-carrier interactions on cooling are still lacking. In this study, using femtosecond pump-push-probe spectroscopy, the scattering of hot carriers with optical phonons, cold carriers, and defects in a benchmark TMD monolayer of polycrystalline WS2 is systematically characterized.

A pre-time-zero spatiotemporal microscopy technique for the ultrasensitive determination of the thermal diffusivity of thin films

Sebin Varghese et al.

Summary: Diffusion, a ubiquitous transport phenomenon, can be experimentally tracked by point spreading. A spatiotemporal pump-probe microscopy technique is introduced here to study diffusion. By utilizing the temperature profile obtained through transient reflectivity, this technique allows for nanometer accuracy in probing the diffusion of long-lived excitations. It also enables the quantification of thermal transport without the need for material input parameters or strong heating.

Exfoliablity, magnetism, energy storage and stability of metal thiophosphate nanosheets made in liquid medium

Kevin Synnatschke et al.

Summary: The family of antiferromagnetic layered metal hexathiohypo diphosphates, M2P2S6, is a versatile class of materials with potential applications in various fields. In this study, three representatives of this family (M = Fe, Ni, and Mn) were exfoliated in liquid phase and their properties were characterized. The exfoliability and structural integrity of nanosheets were evaluated using atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Optical and magnetic properties of these nanomaterials were also investigated using spectroscopic techniques. Additionally, the stability of these materials was studied by measuring their degradation under different conditions.

Photoexcitation Dynamics and Long-Lived Excitons in Strain-Engineered Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Navendu Mondal et al.

Summary: In this research, strain-induced modifications of optical properties and their impact on exciton dynamics in single-crystalline 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) were studied through transient optical absorption. The study found significant spectral redshifts and dramatic slowing down of exciton dynamics in TMD monolayers grown under strain conditions, contrasting with their freestanding form and traditionally grown TMDs. These findings provide key insights into the influence of growth conditions on optical excitations and promote emerging optoelectronic applications of monolayer TMDs.

Summary: The development of inkjet-printed 2D crystal inks allows for the printing of different 2D materials to form vertical heterostructures. This study focuses on the characterization of inkjet-printed MoTe2 nanosheets, which exhibit both semiconducting and metallic phases. Photodetectors based on MoTe2/graphene and WS2/graphene heterostructures show high responsivities at specific wavelengths. The inkjet printing technique provides a new method for the fabrication of flexible optoelectronic devices based on transition metal dichalcogenide-graphene heterostructures.

Phonon-Mediated Interlayer Charge Separation and Recombination in a MoSe2/WSe2 Heterostructure

Zilong Wang et al.

Summary: Experimental and quantum dynamics simulations indicate that charge separation in MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures is ultrafast and temperature-independent, while recombination accelerates significantly with temperature. Charge separation is temperature-independent due to its barrierless nature, involvement of dense acceptor states, and promotion by higher-frequency vibrations, while the strong temperature dependence of recombination arises from modulation of indirect-to-direct bandgap by low-frequency motions.
