Asylum seekers' experiences on the migration journey to Italy (and beyond): Risk factors and future planning within a shifting political landscape

'He must be a man'. Uncovering the gendered vulnerabilities of young Sub-Saharan African men in their journeys to and in Libya

Summary: This article is based on personal narratives collected in Sicily, aiming to uncover the gendered vulnerabilities of young Sub-Saharan African men transiting through Libya. The participants' narratives construct the journey to Libya as an opportunity for them to exhibit their masculinity. The illegal dimension of crossing is portrayed as a site where participants must prove their worth as men, legitimizing dangerous smuggling practices and violence. The gendered vulnerabilities of migrant men in Libya are a result of located masculine and racial hierarchies, fractured mobility, traveling alone, and gender/racial patterns of incorporation in the Libyan illegal economy. Ultimately, these gendered violence experiences force them to embark on the sea crossing to European shores.
