Three-dimensional reliability analysis of unsaturated soil slope considering permeability rotated anisotropy random fields

Charles W. W. Ng et al.

Summary: Spatial variability of soil is an inherent characteristic that affects slope stability. The influence of saturated water permeability on slope stability is not fully understood, especially for three-dimensional slope analysis. This study investigates unsaturated soil slope reliability with three-dimensional rotated anisotropy random fields and proposes a modified covariance matrix decomposition method to improve computational efficiency. The results show that the modified method considerably improves efficiency and that cross-dip slope has higher reliability compared to dip slope and reverse slope.

Seismic Amplification of Soil Ground with Spatially Varying Shear Wave Velocity Using 2D Spectral Element Method

Duruo Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of spatial variability of soils on seismic site amplification, utilizing 2D Spectral Element Method. Key factors influencing the site amplification include variation and spatial correlation of shear wave velocity, with correlation range shown to be frequency dependent. The analyses suggest that both soil heterogeneity and wavelength scales should be considered when quantifying the spatial variability of ground motion amplification.

Novel approach to efficient slope reliability analysis in spatially variable soils

Ze-Zhou Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces a metamodel-based method using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for efficient slope reliability analysis in spatially variable soils. By training CNNs with random field samples, the method can replace computationally demanding RF-FEM analyses for accurate predictions at a fraction of the cost. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed CNN approach in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy compared to other metamodel-based methods.

Topographic amplification of ground motions incorporating uncertainty in subsurface soils with extensive geological borehole data

Duruo Huang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on reconstructing a high-resolution 3D subsurface soil model for Hong Kong Island and explores how uncertainties in subsurface soils can impact seismic topographic amplification. The results show that incorporating uncertainties can significantly increase topographic amplification at high frequencies, highlighting the importance of accurate description of subsurface lithology in detailed analyses.

Effect of random field element size on reliability and risk assessment of soil slopes

Zhiyong Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the influence of RFE size on statistics of factor of safety (FS) and sliding mass (SM) distribution, critical slip surfaces, reliability, and risk of slopes, showing that the RFE sizes have a relatively larger influence on the distribution of SM than that of FS, tending to overestimate slope failure probability and risk with larger RFE sizes.

Risk assessment of soil slope failure considering copula-based rotated anisotropy random fields

Charles W. W. Ng et al.

Summary: This study developed a new method to study the stability of rotated anisotropic soil slopes, revealing that the commonly-used Gaussian copula may underestimate slope failure risk. Additionally, the No.16 copula can provide a more conservative risk assessment when the dependence structure is uncertain.

Large deformation analysis of slope failure using material point method with cross-correlated random fields

Chuan-xiang Qu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cross-correlation between cohesion and the friction angle on the probability of slope failure and post-failure behavior using a random material point method (RMPM). The research demonstrated that mesh size, strength reduction shape factor parameter, and residual strength are critical in determining the post-failure behavior of a slope. Additionally, the study showed that the material point method (MPM) is superior to the finite element method (FEM) in handling large deformations.
