Effects of dietary synbiotics and biofloc meal on the growth, tissue histomorphology, whole-body composition and intestinal microbiota profile of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultured at different salinities

Mursal Abdulkadir Hersi et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of synbiotic and biofloc meal on the growth performance, gastrointestinal microbiota diversification, body composition, gut bacterial counts, and tissue histomorphology of Nile tilapia reared under different salinity levels. The results showed that adding synbiotic and biofloc meal significantly improved the growth performance, body composition, gut bacterial count, and tissue histomorphology of Nile tilapia. Therefore, adding synbiotics and biofloc meal to Nile tilapia diets is an effective strategy that can mitigate the potential adverse effects of salinity on growth and improve gut microbiota, body composition, and tissue histomorphology.

The growth performance, antioxidative capacity, and histological features of intestines, gills, and livers of Nile tilapia reared in different water salinities and fed menthol essential oil

Mahmoud A. O. Dawood et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different salinity levels and dietary menthol essential oil (MNT) on the productivity of Nile tilapia. The results showed that the inclusion of MNT in the diet improved the growth performance and survival rate of Nile tilapia in brackish water, while reducing the occurrence of histological abnormalities in the gills, intestines, and livers.

Light induces peridinin and docosahexaenoic acid accumulation in the dinoflagellate Durusdinium glynnii

Carlos Yure B. Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of irradiance mediated by light-emitting diodes on growth performance, carotenoid and fatty acid profiles, and antioxidant activity of the endosymbiotic dinoflagellate Durusdinium glynnii. The results showed that D. glynnii is well adapted to low-light conditions but can also tolerate high light intensities. The accumulation of peridinin, a light-harvesting carotenoid, in D. glynnii occurred during high-light exposure. The study contributes to understanding the photoprotective role of peridinin in endosymbiont dinoflagellates and highlights the antioxidant activity of peridinin-rich extracts.

Effects of Microalgae Addition and Fish Feed Supplementation in the Integrated Rearing of Pacific White Shrimp and Nile Tilapia Using Biofloc Technology

Vitor F. Silva et al.

Summary: Proper waste management in biofloc technology systems and the study of integrated aquaculture are important. This study evaluated the effects of fish feed and microalgae addition on an integrated shrimp and fish culture system. The results showed that fish feed and microalgae improved fish growth performance and system yield without affecting waste production and water quality.

New insights into the influence of myo-inositol on carbohydrate metabolism during osmoregulation in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Jiahua Zhu et al.

Summary: A two-factor orthogonal test was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary myo-inositol (MI) on the osmoregulation and carbohydrate metabolism of euryhaline fish tilapia under sustained hypertonic stress. The results showed that dietary MI supplementation significantly improved growth performance, crude protein content, ion transport capacity, and carbohydrate metabolism in the fish. It also decreased crude lipid content and promoted antioxidant capacity.

Comparative study of growth, feed efficiency, and hematological profile of Nile tilapia fingerlings in biofloc technology and recirculating aquaculture system

Hamilton Hisano et al.

Summary: This study compared the growth performance of Nile tilapia fingerlings in biofloc technology (BFT) and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) over a period of 60 days, finding that fish in BFT showed superior weight gain and feed efficiency. There were no significant differences in water quality and hematological parameters between the two systems.

Heterotrophic, chemoautotrophic and mature approaches in biofloc system for Pacific white shrimp

Gabriela S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Chemical autotrophic and mature treatments can maintain toxic nitrogen compounds at low levels without addition of carbohydrates, while the heterotrophic system showed higher levels of ammonia and nitrite during the rearing cycle. Both chemical autotrophic and mature treatments maintained water quality, especially nitrogen removal, at a constant level, indicating advantages in shrimp growth. Analysis of microbial communities showed higher protein proportions in the heterotrophic system compared to other treatments.

Recent advances in fishy odour in aquatic fish products, from formation to control

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Aquatic products are rich in high-quality nutrients, but fishy odor hinders their production and consumption. Freshwater and marine fish have different fishy odor compounds, which can be removed or inhibited by improving water quality and using physical or chemical methods.
