Dip coating of bidisperse particulate suspensions

Deok-Hoon Jeong et al.

Summary: Dip coating is a process of coating a substrate with a thin liquid layer by withdrawing it from a bath. The presence of particles introduces new length scales and affects the thickness of the coating film. This study investigates the dip coating of suspensions with a bimodal size distribution of particles. It is found that the effective viscosity approach is still valid when the coating film is thicker than the diameter of the largest particles. A model is proposed to predict the probability of entraining the particles in the liquid film.

Influence of PLGA nanoparticles on the deposition of model water-soluble biocompatible polymers by dip coating

Christophe Sinturel et al.

Summary: This study focused on the formation of nanocomposite films using dip-coating at different withdrawal speeds, analyzing the influence of deposition modes on nanoparticle concentration in the dried films. Unique behavior was observed, calling for further analysis of the physical processes involved in the two distinct deposition regimes.

Dip coating of poly(ethyl methacrylate) and composites from solutions in isopropanol-water co-solvent

Xinqian Liu et al.

Summary: The feasibility of fabricating PEMA and composite films using a dip coating method has been demonstrated, with the use of mixed isopropanol-water co-solvent avoiding traditional toxic solvents. Concentrated solutions of high molecular weight PEMA are key for the fabrication of coatings by this method. Additionally, the study shows the potential for the fabrication of other composites containing functional materials in the PEMA matrix.

Dip-coating flow in the presence of two immiscible liquids

Lorene Champougny et al.

Summary: The study extends the theory of Landau, Levich, and Derjaguin to the situation where two immiscible liquids are used in the dip coating process, showing that the thickness of coated films depends on multiple factors and is influenced by the properties ratio of the two liquids, capillary number, and the relative thickness of upper fluid layer in the bath. The research also highlights the independent evolution of liquid/liquid and liquid/gas interfaces during coating, with final thicknesses determined by maximum shear stresses.
