Polyacrylate and Carboxylic Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Strengthened Aramid Fabrics as Flexible Puncture-Resistant Composites for Anti-Stabbing Applications

Wen-hua Cai et al.

Summary: This study developed a lightweight and soft puncture-resistant composite fabric by coating a water-soluble polyacrylate emulsion (PAE) on the surface of aramid fabric (AF). The composite fabric showed significantly higher maximum load and energy absorption capacity compared to the AF fabric. The puncture resistance of the AF/PAE fabric was superior to that of shear thickening fluid (STF)-impregnated AF (AF/STF) and polyurethane (PU)-sprayed AF (AF/PU). Further enhancement of puncture resistance was achieved by adding carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) to the AF/PAE fabric. MWCNTs-COOH improved the friction between yarns and formed a protective membrane on the fiber surface, reducing fiber fibrillation and increasing the puncture resistance of the fabric.

A UV-filtering, environmentally stable, healable and recyclable ionic hydrogel towards multifunctional flexible strain sensor

Jianyu Yin et al.

Summary: Multifunctional hydrogel sensors are important for flexible wearable devices, but it is challenging to fabricate sensors with high strength, transparency, UV filterability, environmental stability, self-healing capability, and easy recyclability. This paper successfully prepared a multifunctional composite ionic hydrogel (PGETA) by incorporating tannic acid-coated cellulose nanocrystals (TA@CNC) into a hydrogel. The PGETA hydrogel showed high tensile strength, stretchability, transparency, UV-filtering property, low-temperature tolerance, and moisturizing performance, as well as good self-healing capability and recyclability. It can be used as a wearable device to monitor deformations and physiological signals in different body parts.
