The selection of marketplace mode and reselling mode with demand disruptions under cap-and-trade regulation

Xiaoping Xu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the cooperating mode selection problem of a manufacturer selling products through offline and online channels. The study finds that demand disruptions and cross-channel effects significantly influence the manufacturer's optimal operational decisions and platform mode selection. The presence of demand disruptions complicates the manufacturer's mode selection, and higher cross-channel effects can lead to increased production. Furthermore, demand disruptions have a significant impact on the profits of both the manufacturer and the platform.

Selling models for platforms under service-sensitive demand

Xu Chen et al.

Summary: Choosing the right selling model for online retailing is important for e-commerce platforms and manufacturers, and it is influenced by product features, service efficiency, and interfirm power relationships. When the manufacturer dominates, the agency selling model is beneficial, while the reselling model is preferred when the platform has the bargaining power and better service efficiency. The advertising service model is viable under specific conditions.

Resale or agency sale? Equilibrium analysis on the role of live streaming selling

Caixia Hao et al.

Summary: The rise of live streaming selling has revolutionized the retail industry, causing platform-based retailers to face choices in sales formats and marketing decisions. This study establishes live streaming selling models with two sales formats (resale and agency sale) and three pricing strategies (same high, same low, and differential strategies). The impacts of consumer returns in live streaming selling are explored, and it is found that the resale format may be a better choice for both the platform and the supplier when considering consumer returns.

Cold Start to Improve Market Thickness on Online Advertising Platforms: Data-Driven Algorithms and Field Experiments

Zikun Ye et al.

Summary: This study addresses the cold start challenge in online advertising platforms and proposes a data-driven optimization model to balance short-term revenue and long-term market thickness. By using the shadow bidding with learning (SBL) algorithms, the cold start success rate increased by 61.62% while sacrificing less than 1% of short-term revenue. The overall market thickness increased by 3.13% and long-term advertising revenue increased by at least 5.35%.

Gains and Losses of Key Opinion Leaders' Product Promotion in Livestream E-commerce

Baozhuang Niu et al.

Summary: In livestream e-commerce, brand-owners often utilize KOLs for product promotion and sales, but this practice may not always be beneficial. It is observed that KOLs sometimes sell and return products for network externality. To assess the tradeoffs, a study compared the brand-owner's profits with and without a KOL in a dual-channel system. The findings show that the brand-owner's gains/losses depend on the commission rate, retain rate, and network externality intensity.

Store brand introduction in a dual-channel supply chain: The roles of quality differentiation and power structure

Yujie Xiao et al.

Summary: This paper examines a dual-channel supply chain consisting of a manufacturer, a retailer, and a direct channel, focusing on whether the retailer introduces a store brand (SB) and how it impacts profitability. Game-theoretic models are developed to analyze the introduction incentive and power structure. The findings reveal that the retailer's introduction of the SB depends on the quality and inter-brand substitutability. Interestingly, increasing the retailer's power may not incentivize SB introduction.

Can Third-Party Sellers Benefit from a Platform?s Entry to the Market?

Yiting Deng et al.

Summary: Because of the informational advantage of online marketplaces, people often believe that a platform's entry will harm third-party sellers. However, an exploratory analysis of JD.com's sales data for March 2018 unveils an unexpected result: third-party sellers of similar products can charge higher prices, attract more demand, and earn higher profits after the platform's entry. To explain this result, the researchers develop a duopoly model that considers the changing competitive dynamics. The model reveals that under certain conditions, the platform's entry can create a win-win situation for both the seller and the platform.

Channel encroachment and logistics integration strategies in an e-commerce platform service supply chain

Peng He et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impacts of manufacturer's channel encroachment and e-commerce platform's logistics integration on the e-commerce platform service supply chain. The study finds that the platform's complete logistics integration benefits the entire supply chain, regardless of whether the manufacturer implements online channel encroachment or not. Surprisingly, a partial logistics integration strategy outperforms the complete strategy for the manufacturer and the supply chain as a whole, but underperforms for the platform. Two coordination mechanisms are proposed to achieve a three-win situation.

OEM's sales formats under e-commerce platform's private-label brand outsourcing strategies

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: In recent years, e-commerce platforms have introduced private-label brands to compete with national brands. However, there is limited research on the production outsourcing strategy for platform's private brands and its effect on the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). This paper develops a game-theoretical model to investigate the OEM's sales format selection under the platform's outsourcing strategy and the strategic interplay between them. The study finds that the adoption of the same or different contract manufacturer influences the OEM's preference for agency or reselling format, and private-brand acceptance plays a role in this preference.
