Oceanic anoxic events, photic-zone euxinia, and controversy of sea-level fluctuations during the Middle-Late Devonian

Pavel Kabanov et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the global records of anoxic events during the Middle Devonian - earliest Mississippian and explores their triggers and controls. The study focuses on the Horn River Group (HRG), where four major events and numerous positive d(13)C excursions are observed. The occurrences of these events resemble classical Mesozoic oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) and suggest a volcanic trigger, as shown by spikes in Hg and negative Os-187/Os-188 anomalies. The Devonian anoxic events caused extinctions due to deoxygenation, acidification, and intensified weathering and eutrophication of shelfal seas.

Millimetre-scale biomarker heterogeneity in lacustrine shale identifies the nature of signal-averaging and demonstrates anaerobic respiration control on organic matter preservation and dolomitization

Huiyuan Xu et al.

Summary: Through the analysis of an organic-rich, well-laminated shale, it was found that there is variation in organic geochemical proxies at the 2-8 mm scale, which is comparable to the millennial-scale vertical variability. These variations are likely related to factors such as water conditions, microbial activity, anaerobic carbonate precipitation, and organic matter preservation.

Devonian-Carboniferous Pillow OIB-Type Basalts in the Youjiang Basin, SW China: Implications for the Eastern Extension of the Paleo-Tethys Branch Ocean

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: The Late Paleozoic pillow basalts in the Youjiang Basin of SW China have been well preserved. Geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic studies on Late Devonian and Late Carboniferous basalts in the Napo area of the Youjiang Basin reveal that these basalts have similar chemical characteristics to oceanic island basalt and may have originated from enriched mantle. The evolution of these basalts indicates a continuous lithospheric thinning event in the Late Paleozoic, supporting the idea that the Youjiang Basin was in a progressive rifting setting along the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block.

Pyrite Concretions in the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation, South China: Response to Hydrothermal Activity

Zixuan Liu et al.

Summary: The Early Cambrian Niutitang Formation in South China is known for its wide distribution of black shales. This study focuses on the pyrite concretions found in the bottom of the Niutitang Formation, which were formed in a slope-basin environment of the Yangtze Block. The concretions were mainly composed of pyrite, along with other hydrothermal minerals, quartz, and organic matter. The presence of enrichment factors for trace elements Mo and U indicated a euxinic bottom water condition, while high concentrations of Cu, Ni, and excess Ba implied high primary productivity. The sulfur isotope compositions of the pyrite concretions showed little variation and small fractionations compared to coeval seawater, suggesting they were formed in the sediment-water interface during early diagenesis, influenced by both euxinic water and hydrothermal activity.

Influence of hydrothermal and upwelling events on organic matter accumulation in the gas-bearing lower Cambrian shales of the middle Yangtze Block, South China

Hansheng Cao et al.

Summary: With the ongoing studies on the diversification of animals in the early Cambrian period in the Yangtze Block, the resource effects related to environmental changes are being explored. It has been found that regional sedimentary events may have played a crucial role in this process. The Yichang area in the southern Huangling anticline, which is rich in gas, has emerged as a potential site for shale gas development and a suitable target for studying the accumulation of organic matter in the Low Cambrian marine black shales.

Cretaceous to Palaeogene boundary events and palaeoenvironmental responses across pelagic sequences of the Zilina core section, Slovakia: Rock magnetic, biotic, and geochemical characterization

Tiiu Elbra et al.

Summary: The Z ˇilina-Hradisko borehole in Slovakia reveals significant changes in planktonic biota, magnetic properties, and environmental conditions across the Cretaceous-Palaeogene (K-Pg) boundary interval. Micro-palaeontological findings indicate a rapid transition from a stable, oxygen-rich environment to an unstable, cooler environment with reduced oxygenation and biotic stress. The presence of increased detrital input and biogenic magnetite production suggests environmental changes during this period. Additionally, major volcanic eruptions occurred prior to the K-Pg boundary, as indicated by enhanced mercury input into the Maastrichtian Ocean.

Effect of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment on organic matter accumulation in lacustrine shale: Constraints from lithofacies and element geochemistry in the northern Qaidam Basin, NW China

Haihai Hou et al.

Summary: The enrichment of organic matter in lacustrine shale is significantly influenced by paleoclimate and paleoenvironment conditions. Different lithofacies types and geochemical parameters in the shale samples from the Qaidam Basin provide insights into the depositional environments and organic matter accumulation mechanisms. Organic matter content in the shale samples is primarily controlled by detritus input in shallow freshwater lakes under wet and hot paleoclimate conditions, and by anoxic processes in deep saline lakes under arid and cold paleoclimate conditions.

WANCE: A possibly Volcanism-Induced Ediacaran Carbon Isotope Excursion

Zhongwu Lan

Summary: In this study, a SIMS U-Pb age of ca. 620 Ma was determined from continental rift volcanism and it was found to overlap with the Weng' an negative carbonate carbon isotope excursion (WANCE). This suggests a possible causal link between volcanism-induced seafloor uplift and the occurrence of WANCE, as the uplift may have prompted the oxidation of organic carbon in oxygenated surficial oceans.

The results show that the Niutitang Formation is mainly composed of amorphous organic matter and the main hydrocarbon-forming organisms are planktonic green microalgae or dinoflagellates. The Niutitang Formation was deposited under anoxic or dysoxic conditions.

Carbon isotope (δ13Ccarb) stratigraphy of the Lower-Upper Ordovician of the Yangtze Platform, South China: Implications for global correlation and the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE)

Summary: High-resolution carbonate carbon isotope data from the Yangtze Platform in South China reveal five distinct characteristics of δ13C(carb) variations, which can be correlated with equivalent successions in other regions, demonstrating their potential for global correlations. The data also suggest a temporal coincidence between long-term rises in δ13C(carb) and the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, indicating a possible role of enhanced organic matter burial in promoting biodiversity during the Ordovician.
