Co-Optimizing Insulative and Mechanical Properties of Quartz Fabric Reinforced Phenolic Composites by a Compromising Porous Structure for Thermal Insulation

Zhen Qian et al.

Summary: A trade-off design of porous structure was developed for mid density nanoporous phenolic composites (NPC), which showed high-strength, insulation, and anti-ablation abilities. The thermal conductivity of NPC was effectively limited within 0.079-0.115 W/(m center dot K), with a mid-density of 0.89-1.04 g/cm3. Furthermore, NPC exhibited excellent insulation and ablation resistance under oxy-acetylene heat flux.

Ablation behavior and damage mechanisms of carbon/boron-modified phenolic 2.5D woven composite

Fang Dong et al.

Summary: This paper presents the influence of reinforcement structure and matrix microstructure on the ablation mechanism and tensile progressive failure of carbon/phenolic 2.5D woven composites. The results show that the microstructure of the matrix has an important influence on the ablative properties of the specimens. CDP exhibits a better linear ablation rate, while CLP has a lower mass ablation rate. Furthermore, CLP retains higher post-ablation residual properties than CDP.

Pyrolysis behavior of the nanoporous phenolic matrix and the resultant microstructure and property evolution in the composites

Zhen Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, fast pyrolysis and in situ TG-FTIR-MS experiments elucidated the pyrolysis behavior of a nanoporous phenolic matrix (NPM) and illustrated the evolution of microstructures and properties in composites. The results showed that H2, CH4, and CO were the main components of the gas phase, while aromatic compounds were the main components of the condensed liquid phase. The analysis of in situ TG-FTIR-MS experiments revealed that the weight loss of NPM at low temperature was mainly due to the escape of H2O and CO2, while the weight loss at high temperature was caused by the escape of aromatic compounds. Moreover, the variations in the mechanical and thermal insulative performances of nanoporous phenolic composites (NPCs) were analyzed. This work would promote the development and application of porous phenolic composites in thermal protection system fields.

Micro-fracture behaviors of needled short-chopped fiber reinforced phenolic aerogel composites based on in-situ X-ray micro-CT

Bo Niu et al.

Summary: This study innovatively revealed the microfracture behaviors of needled short-chopped fiber reinforced phenolic aerogel composites (PAC) using in-situ X-ray micro-CT. The results showed that the needling yarns caused resin aerogel enrichment, leading to stress concentration and micro-crack initiation. Additionally, the needling yarns effectively hindered fiber separation and orientation, delaying stress transmission.
