Incidence of cleft lip and palate, and epidemiology of perinatal deaths related to cleft lip and palate in Hunan Province, China, 2016-2020

Xu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) and CL/P-related perinatal deaths and provided valuable information for intervention programs. The incidence of CL/P and its major types were calculated and associations with maternal characteristics were examined. CL/P-related perinatal deaths accounted for a significant proportion of all CL/P cases and were more common in rural areas.

Long-term trends in the incidence of congenital anomalies in Central China from 1997 to 2019

Z. Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the incidence and trends of congenital anomalies in Central China's Henan Province from 1997 to 2019. The overall incidence increased over time, with higher rates in urban areas and among males. The incidence of neural tube defects decreased, while congenital heart disease incidence rose, making it the most common anomaly post-2013.

Determinants for Perinatal Mortality in South China: A Prospective Cohort Study

Yiping Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the association between selected maternal and fetal characteristics and the risk of perinatal mortality in South China. The findings showed that factors such as maternal obesity, unhealthy habits during pregnancy, and complications were associated with an increased risk of perinatal death, while being from an ethnic minority, having a high income, being multiparous, and having a cesarean section were associated with a reduced risk of perinatal death.

Stillbirths in China: a nationwide survey

J. Zhu et al.

Summary: The stillbirth rate was 13.2 per 1000 births in China in 2015-2016 and nearly one-third of all stillbirths may be preventable. Regional strategies should be considered to reduce the burden of stillbirths in China. The study identified risk factors such as advanced maternal age, pre-pregnant obesity, and fetal anomalies associated with stillbirths.

Demographic Assessment of Down Syndrome: A Systematic Review

Agustin Huete-Garcia et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the demographic transformation of the Down Syndrome population with a focus on prenatal testing. The findings suggest a strong association between prenatal diagnosis and the decrease in the prevalence of Down Syndrome, as well as a rise in incidence related to maternal age and extension of fertility services. The use of congenital birth defect registries as primary data sources and the unclear influence of socio-cultural and territorial variables were also noted.

Association Between Income and Perinatal Mortality in the Netherlands Across Gestational Age

Joaquim Vidiella-Martin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between household income and perinatal mortality, highlighting that the increased risk among low-income women is mediated through lower birth weight centile. Disparities in perinatal mortality were found for newborns with gestational age greater than 26 weeks, indicating income-related risk factors are less prominent at very low gestational ages. Further research is needed to reduce inequalities in perinatal mortality among preterm births and lower birth weight infants.
