Longitudinal associations between daytime napping and cognitive function in Chinese older adults

Lijuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found a longitudinal association between extended napping duration and worse cognitive function. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), the study observed that in the elderly population, not napping and extended napping were significantly associated with global cognitive decline as well as decline in episodic memory and mental status.

Genetic Evidence for Causal Effects of Socioeconomic, Lifestyle, and Cardiometabolic Factors on Epigenetic-Age Acceleration

Summary: This study identifies modifiable risk factors for accelerated epigenetic aging and provides promising intervention targets against age-related morbidity. Smoking is the strongest risk factor, while education is the strongest protective factor. These findings offer novel quantitative evidence for improving healthy longevity.

Bidirectional relationship between nocturnal subjective sleep duration and cognitive performance in Chinese over 45 years old: a national representative longitudinal study

Chao Li et al.

Summary: This study found bidirectional associations between sleep duration and cognitive function, with different effects at the interindividual and intraindividual levels. Longer subjective nocturnal sleep duration predicted better cognitive performance for short sleepers, but prolonged subjective nocturnal sleep duration led to later cognitive decline for moderate and long sleepers.

Biological aging processes underlying cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disease

Mitzi M. Gonzales et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the development of ADRD and the relationship between age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative changes, highlighting aging processes differentially regulated in neurodegenerative disease. Targeting fundamental processes underlying biological aging may represent a novel avenue to attenuate the development of ADRD.

Brain-age in midlife is associated with accelerated biological aging and cognitive decline in a longitudinal birth cohort

Maxwell L. Elliott et al.

Summary: BrainAGE, a measure of the difference between predicted age from brain-imaging data and chronological age, has been proposed as a biomarker for age-related brain deterioration. Studies suggest that individuals with older brainAGEs may be more susceptible to Alzheimer's, dementia, and mortality, but further research is needed to validate its effectiveness.

Yanjun Ma et al.

Summary: A comparison of cognitive decline trajectories between individuals with borderline hypertension and normal blood pressure showed no significant difference in decline rate, while those with high blood pressure exhibited significantly faster cognitive decline. Individuals with borderline hypertension may not need to start antihypertensive therapy considering cognitive decline.

Summary: A study found that nighttime sleep of 6.1-7 hours and afternoon napping of less than 30 minutes are associated with optimal cognitive function in middle-aged and older individuals. The inflammatory profile partly influences how sleep affects cognition.

A toolkit for quantification of biological age from blood chemistry and organ function test data: BioAge

Dayoon Kwon et al.

Summary: Methods for quantifying biological aging are becoming important tools in epidemiology and population science. While DNA methylation-based measures have been rapidly disseminated, biological age measures derived from blood chemistry data have shown superior performance in predicting healthy lifespan. However, the dissemination of these measures has been slower, resulting in a significant knowledge gap. The BioAge R package was developed to facilitate the measurement of biological age for geroscience research, offering users the ability to quantify biological aging based on analysis of chronological age and mortality risk. Results from using the BioAge toolkit in the CALERIE trial suggest that intervention can slow biological aging.

Biological age in healthy elderly predicts aging-related diseases including dementia

Julia W. Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that accelerated biological age is a predictor of major age-related morbidity, including dementia, among healthy elderly individuals. Additionally, microRNAs were found to be significantly associated with age, with top differentially expressed microRNAs based on biological age having a higher significance level, suggesting that biological age captures aspects of aging signals at the epigenetic level.
