Non-symmetrical 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives: Synthesis, characterization, and computational study of their optical properties

Mario S. S. Oliveira et al.

Summary: In this study, five compounds containing the 1,3,4-oxadiazole group were synthesized and characterized. DFT calculations were used to investigate the photophysical properties of the molecules. The results showed that the presence of pyridine groups increased the first hyperpolarizability, and extending the π-conjugated bridge also increased the value, with the compound containing the 4-pyridyl end group showing the highest value.

Theoretical study of the absorption and emission spectra of 1,2-Bis(9-anthryl)acetylene in cyclohexane and acetonitrile

Vinicius Manzoni et al.

Summary: In this work, TD-DFT combined with Polarizable Continuum Method and QM/MM approach are used to analyze the absorption and emission spectra of 1,2-bis(9-anthryl)acetylene in cyclohexane and acetonitrile. The absorption band at 250 nm is found to be composed of multiple absorption transitions, contributing to its high intensity. Solvent effects have mild influence on the positions of the absorption and emission bands, but affect the relaxation of the excited state. Therefore, we confirm the existence of a charge transfer excited state with symmetry-break after absorption in polar acetonitrile, leading to an emission transition at 510 nm.

Unveiling the relationship between structural and polarization effects on the first hyperpolarizability of a merocyanine dye

Ysmailyn Siqueira et al.

Summary: The nonlinear optical response of Brooker's merocyanine has been studied and rationalized in terms of structural changes and polarization effects. The results showed that structural changes have a significant impact on the response, while polarization effects only cause slight variations. The study also revealed cooperative behavior of these effects at weak and intermediate electric field strengths, and competition between them at strong electric fields.

Solvent enhancement and isomeric effects on the NLO properties of a photoinduced cis-trans azomethine chromophore: A sequential MC/QM study

Antonio Raiol et al.

Summary: This work utilizes a sequential Monte Carlo/Quantum Mechanics procedure to investigate the impact of specific solute-solvent interactions and photoinduced cis-trans isomerization on the nonlinear optical response of an azo-azomethine dye. The findings suggest that the trans isomerization increases the number of solvent molecules around the solute and promotes the formation of hydrogen-bonded structures with solvent molecules. Additionally, the solute polarization significantly influences electronic properties, with the trans structure showing a notable increase in first and second-hyperpolarizability compared to vacuum conditions.

Summary: The analysis of solvent effects on the fluorescence and NLO response of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine was done using s-MC/QM method, showing potential applications in solar cells and biological markers. EC plays a key role in the first hyperpolarizability, with solvent effects being negligible.
