Mining the synergistic effect in hydrothermal co-liquefaction of real feedstocks through machine learning approaches

Jie Yu et al.

Summary: This study employed machine learning algorithms to mine the synergistic effect in co-HTL for the first time. The algorithms showed favorable prediction performances for co-HTL biocrude yield and relative co-liquefaction effect. The study also developed a mini application software for quick estimation of synergy and co-HTL biocrude yield.

Application of life cycle assessment and machine learning for the production and environmental sustainability assessment of hydrothermal bio-oil

Genmao Guo et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal bio-oil (HBO) production from biomass conversion can achieve sustainable and low-carbon development. Machine learning was used to predict bio-oil yield and life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to assess its environmental sustainability effect. The results demonstrated that gradient boosting decision tree regression (GBDT) had the most optimal prediction performance for HBO yield.

Valorization of red macroalgae biomass via hydrothermal liquefaction using homogeneous catalysts

J. Nallasivam et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction of red macroalgae species with different catalysts resulted in varied bio-crude yields and compositions; the bio-crude exhibited high calorific values, while biochars had lower values; the deoxygenation degree and energy recovery of bio-crude were significantly affected by different treatment conditions.

Machine learning prediction of biocrude yields and higher heating values from hydrothermal liquefaction of wet biomass and wastes

Tossapon Katongtung et al.

Summary: Machine learning techniques were used to predict biocrude yields and higher heating values from hydrothermal liquefaction of wet biomass and wastes. An extreme gradient boosting model showed the best prediction accuracy with temperature being the most influential feature. Feedstock characteristics contributed more than 55% to the model, and individual effects and interactions of the most important features were also examined for better understanding of the system.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of sawdust in seawater and comparison between sodium chloride and sodium carbonate

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass using seawater instead of freshwater leads to a decline in biocrude yield, primarily due to interaction between cellulose and lignin. The presence of Na2CO3 has a milder negative effect on biocrude formation compared to NaCl, as it promotes decomposition of intermediates into aqueous and gaseous products. Computational modelling suggests that the activation energy required for Cl- to initiate repolymerization is lower than that for CO32-, indicating different pathways for Na2CO3 and NaCl in biocrude formation.
