Elucidating the Role of Hydrogen Bonds for Improved Mechanical Properties in a High-Performance Semiconducting Polymer

Luke A. Galuska et al.

Summary: The incorporation of hydrogen bond moieties into the backbone or side chain of conjugated polymers can enhance their mechanical performance, facilitate morphological organization, and promote self-healing ability. However, the understanding of the effect of hydrogen bonds on thermomechanical and optoelectronic performance is still limited. In this study, the influence of amide and urea moieties on the mechanical properties of DPP-TVT polymers was compared. It was found that amide functionalization increased the strain at failure, while urea functionalization resulted in a loss of strain at failure, due to the crystalline behavior promoted by intermolecular interactions of urea groups.

Polyethylene and Semiconducting Polymer Blends for the Fabrication of Organic Field-Effect Transistors: Balancing Charge Transport and Stretchability

Piumi Kulatunga et al.

Summary: Polyethylene is a widely used polymer with various applications in our lives. However, its potential in the field of organic electronics has been underexplored. This study focuses on the development of new polymer blends by combining polyethylene with a high-performance semiconducting polymer. The resulting blends were carefully characterized to understand their properties. The introduction of polyethylene had little effect on the solid-state properties, but influenced the solid-state morphology. Organic field-effect transistors prepared from these blends showed good device characteristics, even at higher ratios of polyethylene. The addition of polyethylene also improved the mechanical robustness and stretchability of the semiconducting polymer.

Modulation of the Hydrophilicity on Asymmetric Side Chains of Isoindigo-Based Polymers for Improving Carrier Mobility-Stretchability Properties

Hao-Chi Yen et al.

Summary: This study explores a new approach to control the carrier mobility and stretchability properties of polymers by tuning the hydrophilicity and asymmetric side-chain combination. Different side chains, including carbosilane, oligoether, and semifluorinated side chains, provide different molecular stacking patterns and orientations, affecting the performance and stretchability of the resulting polymers. The experimental results demonstrate that the combination and hydrophilicity of side chains play a crucial role in developing semiconducting polymers with high performance and intrinsic stretchability.
