Drivers of niche partitioning in a community of mid-trophic level epipelagic species in the North Atlantic

Filipe R. Ceia et al.

Summary: According to community ecology principles, sympatric species may undergo selective pressure to reduce niche overlap through niche partitioning mechanisms. However, there is still limited knowledge about the main factors influencing niche differentiation, especially in communities consisting of small-sized and inconspicuous species. This study investigated the coastal epipelagic community structure in the Northeast Atlantic and found that niche partitioning was mainly driven by taxonomic groups, with body size playing a crucial role within species. The results indicate that intrinsic factors are important in reducing inter- and intra-specific niche overlap at the community level.

Model projections reveal a recent decrease in a yellow-legged gull population after landfill closure

Sergio Delgado et al.

Summary: The availability of food in open-air landfills, as a predictable anthropogenic food subsidy, can greatly impact animal biodiversity. This study focused on the impact of reducing such food subsidies on a population of yellow-legged gulls. The findings suggest that the closure of local landfill sites resulted in a decline in survival probability, leading to a decrease in the gull population. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding the effects of food subsidies on wildlife for sustainable resource management.

Food versus Disturbance: Contradictory Effects of Human Activities on an Opportunistic Seabird Breeding in an Oligotrophic Marine System

Rachael A. Carlberg et al.

Summary: The islands of the Aegean Sea are home to diverse seabird communities, which are highly impacted by human activities. Understanding the effects of these activities is crucial for seabird conservation and the management of island ecosystems.

Influence of fisheries on the spatio-temporal feeding ecology of gulls along the western Iberian coast

J. G. Calado et al.

Summary: The research highlighted the importance of fish in the diet of two gull species, which matched the fish landed by local fisheries. The study suggested that gull feeding ecology was linked to fishery discards, with different feeding strategies observed in relation to fisheries. Implications for gull populations across Europe were noted due to the EU landing obligation.
