On the representativeness of polycrystalline models with transformation induced plasticity

Joao A. Marques da Silva et al.

Summary: This contribution analyzes the convergence behavior of representative volume elements (RVEs) with an increasing number of crystalline grains. The influence of crystallographic slip and mechanically induced martensitic formation is studied. Instead of analyzing a single micromechanical model, the representativeness of the RVEs is assessed through distinct macroscopic simulations. A computationally efficient Taylor's condition (FE-T) is assumed to make the convergence analysis feasible. The results showed that the macroscopic response converges regardless of whether the martensitic transformation is considered or not.

Formulation and numerical implementation of a variationally consistent multi-scale model based on second-order computational homogenisation at finite strains for quasi-static problems

Igor A. Rodrigues Lopes et al.

Summary: In this contribution, a multi-scale model that combines macro-scale strain-gradient theory with classical continuum is developed for quasi-static problems. The model allows for the inelastic response of heterogeneous materials at finite strains while considering the microstructural size and non-uniform macroscopic deformation fields within a representative volume element (RVE). The development of the model is based on the Method of Multi-Scale Virtual Power, leading to equilibrium equations and homogenisation relations that ensure a consistent scale transition. The model also enforces kinematic constraints at the RVE level using the Lagrange multiplier method.

Consistent modeling of the coupling between crystallographic slip and martensitic phase transformation for mechanically induced loadings

Miguel Vieira Carvalho et al.

Summary: A computational framework is proposed to model anisotropic metallic polycrystals under mechanically induced loadings. The framework enables the simulation of crystal-plasticity-like phenomena at finite strains and couples the crystallographic slip and martensitic transformation theories. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and predictive capability of the methodology.

Interaction analysis between a propagating crack and an interface: Phase field and cohesive surface models

J. Zambrano et al.

Summary: The interaction phenomenon between a propagating crack and an interface is studied using a phase-field approach and a cohesive surface model. The study finds that the main mechanisms of this interaction include crack deflection into the interface, crack penetration, and crack kinking out of the interface. The occurrence of each mechanism depends on the fracture properties of the interface and the medium. Additionally, the study analyzes the apparent increase of structural toughness due to the crack-interface interaction and the mechanisms leading to this outcome.

On the computational treatment of fully coupled crystal plasticity slip and martensitic transformation constitutive models at finite strains

Miguel Vieira de Carvalho et al.

Summary: This article formulates four numerical techniques to improve the reliability and numerical efficiency of stress update algorithms in crystal-plasticity-like phenomena at finite strains. These techniques are exemplified with a constitutive model that couples crystallographic slip and martensitic transformation deformation mechanisms. They involve sub-stepping, logarithmic discretization, eliminating strain-rate dependence, and efficient strategies for completing the transformation process.

Failure zone homogenization for modeling damage- and debonding-induced softening in composites including gradient-extended damage at finite strains

Lukas Poggenpohl et al.

Summary: A new failure zone averaging scheme at finite strains is proposed in this study, which is applicable in the softening regime for homogenization. Numerical simulations and verification show that the proposed scheme yields size-independent stress-strain relations even after localized damage has occurred leading to strain softening within the RUCs.

On the efficient enforcement of uniform traction and mortar periodic boundary conditions in computational homogenisation

Igor A. Rodrigues Lopes et al.

Summary: This contribution explores the enforcement of uniform traction and periodic boundary conditions on arbitrarily generated meshes, presenting the derivation of the associated macroscopic consistent tangent operators. The study shows that the UT condition only requires rigid body motion to be prescribed in a finite strain setting, with the Lagrange multiplier method leading to a formulation where the homogenised stresses act as the Lagrange multipliers. The computational performance of both methods is compared in terms of time and memory requirements, with the SPS method found to be more efficient in spite of increasing the number of unknowns in the linear system of equations.

Transformation-induced fracture toughening in CuAlBe shape memory alloys: A phase-field study

Cheikh Cisse et al.

Summary: The stress-induced martensitic transformation can relax stress concentration in shape memory alloys, with the toughening capability influenced by grain orientation and crack alignment. Non-isothermal simulations show that self-heating decreases toughening by increasing critical transformation stress. Investigating high stress zones in CuAlBe and non-transforming CuAl alloy reveals toughening by redistributing stress concentration away from the crack tip.
