Flash in argon atmosphere yields electronically conducting yttria-stabilized zirconia at ambient temperature

Seohyeon Jo et al.

Summary: This report presents the retention of electronic conductivity in yttria-stabilized zirconia at room temperature after cooling down from the flash state. Flashing the specimens in Ar gas atmosphere results in higher conductivity compared to LN2-quenched samples. However, specimens flashed in air and air-cooled become insulating. The study also includes measurements of interface resistance at the anode and cathode using the four-point technique.

Mechanical behavior of ZrO2 ceramics in the post-flash stage

Rui Zhao et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of ZrO2 ceramic in the post-flash stage is investigated using the three-point bending method. The current density significantly affects the deformation mode, elastic modulus, and yield strength. There is a current density threshold below and above which the samples exhibit brittle fracture and plastic deformation, respectively. Microstructure analysis reveals the presence of significant dislocations in ZrO2 ceramic materials when current densities exceed the threshold. The unique deformation mode transition observed in the online mechanical test can be attributed to the formation of point defects, dislocations, and structural instability caused by the applied current.

In-flash immersion-and-quench of yttria-stabilized zirconia into liquid nitrogen yields an electronic conductor

Rushi K. Kathiria et al.

Summary: Specimens triggered with flash heating can be held in Stage III both outside the furnace and immersed in liquid nitrogen, with the possibility of locking this state by turning off the power. Materials in this state exhibit metallic behavior, with a conductivity of approximately 11 S/m at room temperature, and enable ex-situ characterization of structural changes induced by flash activation.

Visible light emissions during flash sintering of 3YSZ are thermal radiation

Christian Bechteler et al.

Summary: Flash sintering is a method that densifies ceramics at low furnace temperatures in a few seconds by applying an electric field. One proposed mechanism for the rapid densification involves the generation of Frenkel defects. However, experimental investigation of the emissions during flash sintering of the widely studied ceramic 3YSZ shows that the visible spectrum can be explained by thermal radiation from Joule heating rather than electroluminescence. There is no evidence for electron-hole pair recombination or any mechanism other than Joule heating during flash sintering of 3YSZ.

Pressureless flash sintering of α-SiC: Electrical characteristics and densification

Andrew Gibson et al.

Summary: The application of an electric field over a ceramic powder compact at elevated temperatures can achieve flash sintering in a shorter time compared to conventional sintering, without the need for external pressure. By adding specific sintering aids, high-density sintering can be achieved at lower temperatures.

Generation of electric-field stabilized zirconium monoxide secondary phase within cubic zirconia

Harry Charalambous et al.

Summary: Flash sintering of cubic yttria-stabilized zirconia was studied using in situ energy dispersive diffraction. It was found that a secondary rocksalt-phase zirconium monoxide emerged from the primary fluorite-phase zirconium dioxide under a direct current electric field, but disappeared entirely under an alternating current electric field. The results suggest that direct current can lead to electrochemical reduction of zirconia, impacting sinterability and potential mechanisms are discussed.

Unusual electrode-dependent deformation of 3Y-TZP induced by weak electric current in oxygen-lean atmosphere

Kang Wang et al.

Summary: The plastic deformation behavior of 3Y-TZP under weak electric current in an oxygen-lean atmosphere was investigated in this study. The results showed that the plastic deformation can be significantly promoted by weak electric current, with an increase in current leading to a decrease in flow stress. The observation of electrode-dependent deformation near the cathode side was particularly noteworthy.
