Adsorption behavior of aniline pollutant on polystyrene microplastics

Zhenyu Chen et al.

Summary: Microplastic contamination is widespread in aquatic environments, with increasing plastic production leading to a rise in microplastic pollutants released into the environment. These plastic particles can absorb various chemical pollutants and contribute to toxin accumulation in the food chain. This study investigated the adsorption behavior of aniline, a priority environmental pollutant, on polystyrene microplastics (mPS). The results showed that mPS had a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.060 mg/g, with equilibrium reached after 24 hours. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich model described the adsorption isotherms. The adsorption mechanisms may involve 7C-7C interactions and hydrophobic interactions. Factors such as pH, ionic strength, and temperature of the solution played significant roles in the adsorption process.

Adsorption of heavy metals on biodegradable and conventional microplastics in the Pearl River Estuary, China

Min Shi et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been increasing worldwide attention on the adsorption of heavy metals on microplastics (MPs), which are emerging carriers for environmental pollutants. However, the understanding of heavy metal adsorption on biodegradable MPs in estuarine environments is still limited. This study investigated the aging of biodegradable and conventional MPs in the Pearl River Estuary after long-term exposure and their impacts on heavy metal adsorption from seawater. The results showed that both types of MPs could adsorb heavy metals, with fluctuating adsorption capacities on different MPs and exposure times. The aging characteristics of MPs played a significant role in heavy metal adsorption, accounting for 51.0% of the contribution, while environmental factors only contributed to 13.2%.

Sorption kinetics, isotherms and molecular dynamics simulation of 17β-estradiol onto microplastics

Yifei Leng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption kinetics, isotherm and influencing factors of 17β-estradiol (E2) on three dominant microplastics, as well as analyzed the adsorption mechanism using molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that E2 adsorption onto microplastics followed Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Redlich-Petersen isotherm model. The adsorption capacity of E2 on microplastics was polyethylene (PE) > polypropylene (PP) > polystyrene (PS). The small particle size of microplastics facilitated the adsorption due to its large specific surface area. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of E2 was a spontaneous and exothermic process, with low temperature being beneficial for adsorption. MD simulation confirmed that E2 adsorption on microplastics belonged to surface adsorption, consistent with experimental results.

Interaction between antibiotics and microplastics: Recent advances and perspective

Shuting Zhuang et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively summarized the interaction characteristics and mechanisms between microplastics and antibiotics, with a particular emphasis on the weathering properties of microplastics and the growth of attached biofilm. The study found that aged microplastics usually adsorb more types and quantities of antibiotics from aquatic environments compared to virgin microplastics, and the attached biofilm can further enhance adsorption capacities and biodegrade some antibiotics. This research fills the knowledge gaps of the interaction between microplastics and antibiotics, provides basic information for evaluating their combined toxicity, reveals the distribution of both emerging pollutants in the global water chemical cycle, and informs measures to remove microplastic-antibiotic pollution.

Spatial-temporal distributions and influential factors of phthalate acid esters in sediments of three lakes in Inner Mongolia

Yan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distributions, influential factors, and ecological risks of 15 phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in the sediments of three typical lakes in Inner Mongolia. The results showed that PAEs were widespread in surface sediments, with highest concentrations in lakes with higher population density and anthropogenic activities. The cold climate explained the higher abundance of DEP in sediments from lakes at higher latitudes. Most PAEs were terrestrial pollutants, and highest PAE concentrations were found at discharge river estuaries. PAE concentrations in core sediments increased with years and fluctuated due to PAE usage and input. Risk assessment indicated that DIBP and DEP posed high risks to sensitive fish.
