Crucial roles of ion-specific effects in the flotation of water-soluble KCl and NaCl crystals with fatty acid salts

Kangkang Sun et al.

Summary: Flotation of water-soluble KCl and NaCl minerals in brines is significant for K-fertilizer production, but its mechanism remains controversial. This study investigates the interaction between dissolved salt ions and collector colloids, as well as the changes in interfacial properties, to gain a molecular understanding of salt flotation. The findings suggest that ion specificity plays a crucial role in salt crystal flotation via collector colloid-crystal attraction.

The effects of saline water on the recovery of lead and zinc sulfide during froth flotation

Anna M. Nowosielska et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of water salinity on the flotation performance of lead and zinc sulfide minerals were investigated. The results showed that higher concentrations of NaCl salt solutions led to higher recoveries of PbS and ZnS. Additional ions in seawater, such as Ca2+ and Mg2+, significantly reduced the recovery of PbS and ZnS. A surface complexation model for ZnS was developed and validated, which accurately predicted the behavior of ZnS particles under various pH and NaCl concentrations. Theoretical analyses revealed the repulsive and attractive interactions between particles and bubbles, as well as the influence of NaCl concentration.

Synergistic depression mechanism of Ca2+ ions and sodium silicate on bastnaesite flotation

Zhao Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of Ca2+ ions and sodium silicate individually or in combination on bastnaesite flotation. The results show that the combination of Ca2+ ions and sodium silicate more severely depresses bastnaesite due to their synergistic effect.

Coupling Flotation Rate Constant and Viscosity Models

Mohsin Sajjad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of particle-bubble and particle-particle interactions on flotation efficiencies. The results showed that the presence of fine particles increased the suspension viscosity and negatively affected the flotation performance. The study also proposed a novel approach by coupling the suspension rheology model with the flotation rate constant model, which improved the understanding of the problematic behavior of ultra-fine/fine particles in flotation.

Flotation surface chemistry of water-soluble salt minerals: from experimental results to new perspectives

Kangkang Sun et al.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive review of the flotation separation of water-soluble salt minerals, summarizing the agreement and disagreement between experimental results and theories. The results show that the flotation of salt is strongly influenced by collectors, brine ion composition, and pH conditions, and there are some exceptional results that cannot be explained by crystal surface charge and wettability. The authors suggest that the interactions between salt ions, water molecules, collectors, and salt crystals should be considered more thoroughly, with a focus on the activity of collectors at the air-liquid interface.

Towards waterless operations from mine to mill

Saija Luukkanen et al.

Summary: To meet the increasing demand for commodities, more primary ores need to be mined, but this poses challenges in water and tailings management due to low ore grades and mining activities in water-stressed areas. There is growing interest in alternative solutions that use little or no water to produce raw material concentrates. However, dry separation technologies are rare and depend on the materials being separated. Energy-efficient solutions are needed for processing low-grade complex ores, such as optimizing the rock fragmentation chain and applying pre-concentration methods. The shift from wet to non-aqueous processing requires multidisciplinary research and innovative solutions.

Dispersion and depression mechanism of sodium silicate on quartz: Combined molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations

Haiqing Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dispersion and depression mechanism of sodium silicate on quartz through molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that a stable adsorption layer of sodium silicate prevented other substances from contacting quartz. Sodium silicate adsorbed on the quartz surface mainly in the form of SiO(OH)(3)(-) and Si(OH)(4), with strong hydrogen and covalent bonds as the main driving forces.
