Severe air pollution hinders green development, and understanding how the spatial structure of urban agglomerations affects air pollution is crucial for high-quality economic growth. This study uses panel data from 20 urban agglomerations in China to analyze the impact of spatial structure on regional PM2.5 concentration. The findings indicate that improving resource allocation in urban agglomerations can reduce PM2.5 pollution, and a reasonable spatial structure is beneficial for optimizing resource allocation and improving air quality.

Is government regulation a push for corporate environmental performance? Evidence from China

Summary: The Chinese government issued new ambient air quality standards in 2012 to control pollution and improve air quality. Using a quasi-natural experiment, this study examines the effect of these regulations on corporate environmental performance (CEP) using data from Chinese listed enterprises from 2008 to 2018. The findings show that the new standards significantly promote the improvement of CEP, but the effect is weakened in provinces with less regulatory enforcement and poor environmental information transparency. Additionally, the influence of the new standards decreases when enterprises are regulated by the government at a greater administrative hierarchical distance.

Coupling and coordination analysis in urban agglomerations of China: Urbanization and ecological security perspectives

Summary: Along with China's rapid urbanization development, the severe ecological security problems brought by urbanization activities have been widely discussed. This study constructs a comprehensive evaluation system of urbanization and ecological security based on three major urban agglomerations in China, and analyzes their levels and coordination using various methods. The results show that the core cities have higher levels of urbanization and ecological security, while peripheral cities have lower levels. The coordination development in the urban agglomerations is relatively stable, with the emergence of an aggregation effect. Overall, there is a possibility of club convergence in the coupling coordination development of urban agglomerations.

Capital market liberalization and green innovation for sustainability: Evidence from China

Innovation agglomeration and urban hierarchy: evidence from Chinese cities

We establish a general equilibrium framework for urban innovation, and empirically analyze 286 prefecture level Chinese cities to evaluate the impact of urban tier on innovation agglomeration. Spatial effect of environmental regulation on green innovation efficiency: Evidence from prefectural-level cities in China

Shorter official tenure and lower enterprises' profitability weakened the impact of ER on GIE. The government should strengthen regional cooperation, improve public environmental supervision, and formulate stringent but differentiated ER based on local conditions.
