Impact of spatial structure of urban agglomerations on PM2.5 pollution:Based on resource misallocation

Shijin Wang et al.

Summary: The spatial structure of urban agglomerations affects economic development and environmental conditions. Severe air pollution hinders green development, and understanding how the spatial structure of urban agglomerations affects air pollution is crucial for high-quality economic growth. This study uses panel data from 20 urban agglomerations in China to analyze the impact of spatial structure on regional PM2.5 concentration. The findings indicate that improving resource allocation in urban agglomerations can reduce PM2.5 pollution, and a reasonable spatial structure is beneficial for optimizing resource allocation and improving air quality.

How does manufacturing agglomeration affect high-quality economic development in China?

Jie Guo et al.

Summary: Innovation, coordination, green initiatives, openness, and sharing are considered essential for high-quality economic development in China. Using a novel index, this study examines the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on high-quality economic development. The findings show that manufacturing agglomeration promotes high-quality economic development within and beyond regions, but its effects vary across different regions. However, it hinders local coordination and restrains green development. These findings offer timely policy evaluations in China.

Yidai Feng et al.

Summary: Financial agglomeration is crucial for promoting the green transformation of the global economy and environmental governance. This study examines the impact and mechanism of financial agglomeration on green development in China, considering spatial spillover effects. The findings show that financial agglomeration has significant spatial spillover effects on green development, especially for cities in the servitization stage or with high administrative level. The main paths through which financial agglomeration affects green development include industrial structure upgrading, labor upgrading, and technological innovation.

Is government regulation a push for corporate environmental performance? Evidence from China

Weike Zhang et al.

Summary: The Chinese government issued new ambient air quality standards in 2012 to control pollution and improve air quality. Using a quasi-natural experiment, this study examines the effect of these regulations on corporate environmental performance (CEP) using data from Chinese listed enterprises from 2008 to 2018. The findings show that the new standards significantly promote the improvement of CEP, but the effect is weakened in provinces with less regulatory enforcement and poor environmental information transparency. Additionally, the influence of the new standards decreases when enterprises are regulated by the government at a greater administrative hierarchical distance.

Spatial spillover effect of green finance on economic development, environmental pollution, and clean energy production across China

Chenggang Li et al.

Summary: Although the extensive development model has propelled China's economy to the forefront, it has also resulted in serious environmental pollution. The Chinese government aims to control environmental pollution and achieve high-quality economic development through green finance. The study finds that green finance can promote high-quality economic development and curb environmental pollution in China, but it also weakens clean energy production.

Environmental innovation, climate change and knowledge diffusion process: How can spillovers play a role in the goal of sustainable economic performance?

Luigi Aldieri et al.

Summary: Technological innovation can have both positive and negative impacts on climate change. On one hand, it promotes economic growth and energy consumption, leading to increased carbon emissions. On the other hand, environmental innovations aim to reduce the impact of economic activities on climate change. Research findings suggest that while the overall R&D process is detrimental to climate change, the knowledge diffusion process of energy innovations has a positive impact on climate change mitigation.

Spatial effects of industrial synergistic agglomeration and regional green development efficiency: Evidence from China

Jian Ding et al.

Summary: Collaborative industrial agglomeration has a positive impact on regional green development efficiency, with spatial agglomeration and spillover effects. Green technological progress plays a crucial mediating role in this process. Regional heterogeneity reveals that the influence of synergistic industrial agglomeration on the improvement of green development efficiency is higher in the central and western regions than in the eastern regions.

Coupling and coordination analysis in urban agglomerations of China: Urbanization and ecological security perspectives

Peng Zeng et al.

Summary: Along with China's rapid urbanization development, the severe ecological security problems brought by urbanization activities have been widely discussed. This study constructs a comprehensive evaluation system of urbanization and ecological security based on three major urban agglomerations in China, and analyzes their levels and coordination using various methods. The results show that the core cities have higher levels of urbanization and ecological security, while peripheral cities have lower levels. The coordination development in the urban agglomerations is relatively stable, with the emergence of an aggregation effect. Overall, there is a possibility of club convergence in the coupling coordination development of urban agglomerations.

Capital market liberalization and green innovation for sustainability: Evidence from China

Gen-Fu Feng et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of capital market liberalization on green innovation. Through empirical analysis, the results show that capital market liberalization promotes green innovation in China, with a stronger effect on green invention patents. The effects vary across firms with different ownership or scale, as well as between AH cross-listed and non-AH cross-listed firms. The research also finds that capital market liberalization spurs green innovation through reducing financing constraints and improving information disclosure quality.

Industrial collaborative agglomeration, marketization, and green innovation: Evidence from China's provincial panel data

Weiping Zeng et al.

Summary: This study used panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2003 to 2017 to investigate the impact of industrial collaborative agglomeration on green innovation. The findings suggest that marketization plays a moderating and threshold effect on the negative influence of industrial collaborative agglomeration on green innovation. Improvements in marketization can help to mitigate the adverse effects of industrial collaborative agglomeration on green innovation.

Innovation agglomeration and urban hierarchy: evidence from Chinese cities

Fei Fan et al.

Summary: Innovation agglomeration leads to changes in the hierarchical structure of innovation, driving regional economic development. We establish a general equilibrium framework for urban innovation, and empirically analyze 286 prefecture level Chinese cities to evaluate the impact of urban tier on innovation agglomeration. The main results show that the spatial structure of innovation in Chinese cities is consistent with the urban tier, and the impact of city scale on innovation agglomeration is nonlinear, with the higher agglomeration of innovation resources in high-tier cities.

Spatial effect of environmental regulation on green innovation efficiency: Evidence from prefectural-level cities in China

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of environmental regulation (ER) on green innovation efficiency (GIE) in prefecture-level cities in China from a spatial correlation perspective. The empirical results show that GIE first declined and then increased, with a significant spatial spillover effect of ER on GIE showing a U-shaped impact. Shorter official tenure and lower enterprises' profitability weakened the impact of ER on GIE. The government should strengthen regional cooperation, improve public environmental supervision, and formulate stringent but differentiated ER based on local conditions.
