The local coupling and telecoupling of urbanization and ecological environment quality based on multisource remote sensing data

Wenjia Li et al.

Summary: Coordinating the relationship between urbanization and ecological environment quality (EEQ) is crucial for achieving sustainable development. This study proposes a remote sensing ecological environment index (RSEEI) model and measures the local and telecoupling coordination degree (LTCCD) of urbanization and EEQ in China from 2000 to 2020. The results show that the rate of change of EEQ in China is -0.00011a-1 and RSEEI widens the gap between the east and west of EEQ. China's urbanization is growing at a rate of 0.0008a-1 with spatially driven radiation potential. LTCCD follows an increasing trend and over 70% of provinces experience coordination after 2010.

Greening the globe: Uncovering the impact of environmental policy, renewable energy, and innovation on ecological footprint

Michael Appiah et al.

Summary: This study examines the effectiveness of environmental policy in reducing ecological footprint while considering the roles of renewable energy and innovation. Employing a cross-sectional autoregressive distributed lags to analyze panel data of 29 OECD countries from 1990 to 2020, the study finds that environmental policy significantly reduces ecological footprint among OECD countries, with its efficacy contingent upon bio-capacity surplus/deficit and the level of industrialization. The study also reveals that renewable energy has a favourable impact on ecological footprint reduction, while innovation improves the environmental quality of OECD countries. However, population density and industrialization were found to decrease and increase ecological footprint, respectively. The study's findings demonstrate bi-directional causation between ecological footprint and all variables except for economic growth, and are robust under the conditions of short-run heterogeneity, long-run homogeneity, and cross-sectional dependence.

Green location-oriented policies and carbon efficiency: a quasi-natural experiment from National Eco-industrial Demonstration Parks in China

Lina Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of National Eco-industrial Demonstration Parks (NEDP) on carbon emission efficiency in China. The study uses the difference-in-differences (DID) strategy for analysis and finds that the construction of NEDP contributes to the improvement of carbon emission efficiency. The findings are robust through placebo tests and propensity score matching. Heterogeneity analysis shows that NEDP construction is more effective in improving carbon efficiency in non-resource-based cities and environmentally friendly cities. Mechanism analysis reveals that green technology innovation, industrial restructuring, and the relocation of industrial enterprises are effective ways to improve carbon efficiency in NEDP. Finally, the study identifies the spatial spillover effects of NEDP construction on carbon efficiency, which can effectively enhance the carbon efficiency level in the locality and nearby areas.

Role of Enterprise Alliance in Carbon Emission Reduction Mechanism: An Evolutionary Game Analysis

Jichao Geng et al.

Summary: This study constructs a game model for enterprise alliances, designs a mechanism for joint responsibility of the alliance and the government in carbon emission reduction work, and explores the evolutionarily stable strategies (ESSs) of the government, enterprises, and enterprise alliance under carbon tax and carbon trading policies through numerical simulations. The findings indicate that the ESSs of the enterprise alliance always involve providing technical support to enterprises. Furthermore, a carbon trading price below a critical value can motivate enterprises to engage in honest emission reduction, while a higher carbon tax rate is negatively correlated with enterprise emission reduction behavior. Moreover, when enterprises underreport carbon emissions beyond a critical value, they may evolve into dishonest emission reduction practices. The study suggests that the high level of underreported carbon emissions by enterprises can prompt government supervision, and provides valuable insights for optimizing existing carbon emission reduction mechanisms and achieving win-win cooperation between enterprises and the government in the carbon trading market.
