Flow visualization of the transient effect of the internal two-phase flow on the external iso-pentane flashing spray under different injection pressure

Jiafeng Wang et al.

Summary: Flashing spray occurs when a saturated liquid is discharged into a gaseous environment at a lower pressure, and the internal flow plays a crucial role in determining the behavior of the external flashing spray. In this study, the transient effect of iso-pentane working medium was investigated, specifically focusing on the combined effect of superheat level and injection pressure. Different stable spray patterns were observed under different injection pressures, ranging from non-shattering to completely shattering, and a correlation between the spray cone angle and the shattering index was proposed. In addition, the formation of high-void-fraction internal two-phase flow in partially shattering or completely shattering patterns led to a hysteretic flashing spray with significant changes in spray cone angle and droplet concentration.

Breakup regime of flashing jet under thermal nonequilibrium and mechanical forces and its relationship with jet characteristics during depressurized releases of superheated liquid

Xueliang Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a 20 L tank was used to investigate the two-phase flow behaviors during depressurized releases of superheated liquids. The researchers utilized high-speed camera and phase Doppler anemometry to analyze the characteristics of the jet and its breakup. Based on the interaction between thermodynamic and mechanical effects, quantitative criteria were developed to distinguish different breakup regimes.

Parametric investigation on the close-loop R410A flash spray system for high power electronics cooling under low temperature

Ren-Jie Ji et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of spray chamber pressure, mass flow rate, and subcooling degree on the cooling capacity in flash spray cooling. It is found that initial increases in these parameters improve heat transfer performance, but further increases deteriorate the heat transfer. Atomization performance affected by the spray parameters is the main reason for the heat transfer.

A parametric study of a hybrid battery thermal management system that couples PCM with wavy microchannel cold plate

Yonghao Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, an innovative system called hybrid wavy microchannel cold plate (HWMCP) using PCM and wavy microchannel cold plate (WMCP) is designed and analyzed. The heat storage capacity of HWMCP increases with the increase of PCM thickness and height ratio h1/h2. The cooling capacity of HWMCP is slightly improved when the liquid microchannels grow in number. Compared with unidirectional flow, cross flow significantly reduces the maximum temperature of the battery and improves the utilization rate of PCM.

Effect on flash boiling spray characteristics in the far-field and near-field and nozzle tip wetting with multi-hole LPDI injector

Young Soo Yu et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effect of flash boiling spray on the spray characteristics and nozzle tip wetting in Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) direct injection system. The experimental results show that as the fuel temperature increases, the spray plumes expand and develop, resulting in an increase or decrease in the wet area and boundary on the nozzle tip.

Thermal nonequilibrium and mechanical forces induced breakup and droplet formation of superheated liquid jets under depressurized release

Xueliang Zhu et al.

Summary: Superheated liquid jets disintegrate into droplets due to thermal nonequilibrium induced flashing and mechanical forces during depressurization. This study investigates the breakup and droplet formation of superheated liquid jets under depressurized releases using an experimental tank. The interaction between thermodynamic and mechanical effects is discussed and a quantitative relationship is established. The results show different breakup modes and highlight the importance of considering the cooling effect in addition to thermodynamic and mechanical effects.

Experimental study of methanol atomization and spray explosion characteristic under negative pressure

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the explosion characteristics of methanol spray under negative pressure. It is found that the decrease of methanol concentration, the increase of ambient temperature, and injection pressure promote the breakage of methanol spray. Increasing spray concentration contributes to the spray explosion, but when the concentration exceeds a certain range, the explosion pressure decreases due to poor oxygen. The increase of ambient temperature has a significant promoting effect on spray explosion, especially under negative pressure conditions.

Morphological characteristics and flashing mechanism of superheated liquid jets released from rectangular breaches

Hao Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the accidental release behavior of liquefied gases by simulating different shapes of nozzle breaches. The results show that the rectangular nozzle and circular nozzle have different external morphologies, with the aspect ratio playing a critical role in determining the external morphology of the rectangular nozzle. Additionally, the rectangular nozzle has a different flashing mechanism compared to the circular nozzle. Compared to circular breaches, rectangular breaches significantly promote jet flashing, leading to more serious consequences of accidents.

Experimental investigation on the macroscopic spray and microscopic droplet diameter, velocity and temperature of R404A flashing spray

Zhi-Fu Zhou et al.

Summary: Two-phase flashing spray generates fine atomization with small size and low temperature droplets through explosive atomization and strong evaporation. This study experimentally investigated the macroscopic spray and microscopic droplets of R404A refrigerant, revealing changes in droplet diameter and velocity with increasing axial distance, showing Gaussian distributions. The two-dimensional thermal field contractively patterned after rapid expansion at the nozzle exit, aiding in precise control of the spray cooling area.

Summary: The experimental results show that despite the variation of length-diameter ratio of the leakage holes, the expansion angles and jet velocities behave similarly and maintain stable values. An empirical two-phase mass outflow rate model has been developed based on the experimental data, which can be supported in mass flow rate evaluation, especially for specific release cases.
