Linking spatial and temporal contexts to multi-contextual segregation by hukou status in urban China

Summary: The research shifts from a place-based to a people-based perspective in segregation research, focusing on dynamic spatiotemporal segregation. The effects of different geographical and temporal contexts on individuals' daily lives are not clear, as there are limited empirical studies on individual-level segregation from a space-time nexus perspective. This study uses activity-travel diary data in Shanghai, China, and employs an individual-level spatiotemporal proximity index to measure multi-contextual segregation. It finds that migrant and rural populations experience higher levels of segregation not only in residential and activity spaces but also in various space-time contexts in their daily lives. Temporal variations in hukou segregation are revealed, correlating with the arrangement of daily activities and the temporal rhythm of the city. The study emphasizes the importance of geographical contexts within residential spaces and activity spaces in mitigating hukou segregation.

Local urban attributes defining ethnically segregated areas across English cities: A multilevel approach

Summary: This study explores the relationships between ethnic segregation, socioeconomic factors, and built environment characteristics within and between cities in England. The findings indicate that ethnic minority segregated areas are associated with distinct socioeconomic patterns, but do not lack access to good quality schools and public transport compared to white population communities. Compared to white populations, ethnically segregated communities consistently experience higher unemployment, long-term illness, larger household size, and higher exposure to pollution. These relationships are remarkably similar across ethnic groups, demonstrating the extent of systematic persistent disadvantage experienced by minority communities relative to white populations. Moreover, the strength of these relationships varies widely across cities, although the overall systematic pattern prevails.

Measuring spatial age segregation through the lens of co-accessibility to urban activities

This article introduces a methodological approach to assess the degree of spatial age segregation, taking into account the age-adjusted accessibility and diversity of different activity locations. Understanding different levels of segregation in urban China: a comparative study among 21 cities in Guangdong province
