Fire-released seed dormancy - a global synthesis

Juli G. Pausas et al.

Summary: Seed dormancy varies greatly between species, with fireprone ecosystems providing ideal conditions for dormancy release and germination. Different fire regimes lead to variation in type and abundance of fire-released dormancy, with heat and/or chemical by-products being key stimuli. These dormancy syndromes are associated with certain lineages, with phylogenetic conservatism playing a role in the evolution and maintenance of diverse seed dormancy types.

Shifting season of fire and its interaction with fire severity: Impacts on reproductive effort in resprouting plants

Alexandria M. Thomsen et al.

Summary: The season of fire has clear impacts on plant vigor and reproductive response, with autumn fires promoting flowering and fire severity driving vegetative growth. Fire season and severity can have independent as well as interacting effects on post-fire plant traits.

Distribution of seed dormancy classes across a fire-prone continent: effects of rainfall seasonality and temperature

Justin C. Collette et al.

Summary: Different seed dormancy classes may be subject to different selective pressures and have diverse functional responses. Species showing PD dormancy are more likely to be threatened in aseasonal rainfall climate regions.

Limits to post-fire vegetation recovery under climate change

Rachael H. Nolan et al.

Summary: Research suggests that while many plant communities may remain resilient to shifting fire regimes in the short-term, long-term changes in vegetation structure, demography, and species composition are likely, which will have a range of subsequent effects on ecosystem function.
