Multi-objective optimisation of aluminium skins and recycled/perforated PET foams sandwich panels subjected to impact loads

Sergio Luiz Moni Ribeiro Filho et al.

Summary: This work describes a methodology for the multi-objective optimization of sandwich structures made of aluminium skins and recycled PET foams with perforated architecture. The designs are evaluated using a nonlinear finite element (FE) model validated by comparing the load, displacement and final shape of a representative sandwich panel against related experimental results. Experimental tests characterize the mechanical performance of the sandwich panels and the bonding between different components. The optimization process is demonstrated to effectively design lightweight sandwich panels with superior structural performance.

Free vibration analysis of variable stiffness composite laminated beams and plates by novel hierarchical differential quadrature finite elements

Yang Yan et al.

Summary: This work investigates the free vibration behavior of variable stiffness composite laminates (VSCLs) using the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) and weak form differential quadrature finite element method (DQFEM). The novel solutions proposed in the research allow for more robust formulations of Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) and Layer-Wise (LW) models, with accuracy and effectiveness validated through numerical examples and comparison to published data.

Behaviour of continuous fibre composite sandwich core under low-velocity impact

Sartip Zangana et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing core thickness improved impact capacity, while increasing core height decreased sandwich strength. Finite element analysis simulated the damage status and mechanism of the novel composite core sandwich. The multi-cell composite corrugated core increased impact capacity, and the trapezoidal composite corrugated sandwich core showed higher specific strength compared to traditional honeycomb, truss, and foam cores.

In-plane compression response of woven CFRP composite after low-velocity impact: Modelling and experiment

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: A finite element model was developed to predict the low-velocity impact and compression-after-impact behavior of woven carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Experimental results validated the accuracy of the model, and detailed microscopic damage analysis was conducted on the composites. The effects of impactor diameter and impact energy on impact damage and CAI behaviors were discussed based on the model.

Effect of stepwise gradient on dynamic failure of composite sandwich beams with metal foam core subject to low-velocity impact

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Among all gradient distributions of foam cores, the impact resistance of the fully clamped composite sandwich beams with negative-gradient foam cores design is the highest. The low-density foam layer at the impact end leads to local failure mode, while the high-density foam layer at the impact end brings about global failure mode. The simply supported graded sandwich beam exhibits softening post-failure behavior, while the fully clamped graded sandwich beam displays hardening post-failure behavior.

A generalized 2D Bezier-based solution for stress analysis of notched epoxy resin plates reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets

Hossein Kabir et al.

Summary: This study extends a robust Bezier-based method to solve the governing fourth order complex partial differential equation in linear elastic fracture mechanics problems and explores the impact of GnP aspect ratio on enhancing material properties. The results suggest that GnPs with maximum aspect ratio are most effective in improving elastic properties of the plate and potentially limiting crack propagation, providing valuable insights for material reinforcement.

Experimental evaluation and modelling of drilling responses in CFRP/honeycomb composite sandwich panels

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the drilling responses of carbon fibre reinforced plastic composite sandwich panels through experiments and finite element analysis, with validation and analysis of damage mechanisms. The results show maximum errors between FEA-predicted and experimental thrust forces of 12.5% and 7.5% for CSPs, and provide a detailed study of damage mechanisms during drilling.

On the impact response of UHMWPE woven fabrics: Experiments and simulations

Hongxu Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study on the impact behaviour of UHMWPE woven fabrics, including geometric measurement of fabric parameters, tensile testing of constituent yarns, impact testing of fabrics, and numerical modelling of fabrics. Two fabric materials were examined, and the results show that UHMWPE yarns are highly sensitive to strain rate at low loading rates.
