The key role of μH2O gradients in deciphering microstructures and mineral assemblages of mylonites: examples from the Calabria polymetamorphic terrane

Fabrizio Tursi

Summary: The study highlights the importance of understanding chemical potential gradients, particularly H2O, in the formation of mineral assemblages in mylonites. Results show that new minerals tend to form in higher-mu H2O conditions than their surroundings. The banded fabric of mylonites is related to fluid availability, with gradients in mu H2O influencing the formation of hydrated mineral bands alternating with anhydrous mineral bands.

Orthopyroxene rim growth during reaction of (Co, Ni, Mn, Zn)-doped forsterite and quartz: Experimental constraints on element distribution and grain boundary diffusion

Sarah Incel et al.

Summary: Mantle metasomatism is an important process in subduction zones that leads to chemical alteration of the mantle. Experimental studies on the redistribution of elements during mantle metasomatism using a simplified model reaction showed specific partitioning between minerals. The results provide insights into understanding mantle metasomatism in nature.

The effect of fluorine on reaction-rim growth dynamics in the ternary CaO-MgO-SiO2 system

Mees Gijsbert Franke et al.

Summary: The growth of reaction rims is influenced by physical parameters, chemical composition, and the presence of volatiles. This study investigates the effect of fluorine on the growth dynamics of reaction rims in the CaO-MgO-SiO2 system. The addition of fluorine not only affects the sequence of minerals in the reaction rim but also enhances component mobilities and leads to faster rim growth rates. These findings have implications for understanding the role of fluorine in metamorphic and metasomatic processes.

Complexions and stoichiometry of the 60.8°//[100](011) symmetrical tilt grain boundary in Mg2SiO4 forsterite: A combined empirical potential and first-principles study

Jean Furstoss et al.

Summary: In this work, we investigated the low-energy complexions of the symmetrical tilt grain boundary in forsterite. Through molecular dynamics and first principles calculations, we found six stoichiometric complexions and studied the segregation of MgO vacancy pairs. The vacancies were found to preferentially lie within the grain boundaries and lead to non-stoichiometric structures. Additionally, we observed the presence of free oxygen ions in many grain boundary complexions, which could have significant implications for geological processes.
