Maximizing modulation efficiency to minimize 1/f noise in magnetoresistance

Yuyu Hou et al.

Summary: A universal modulation theory has been established to address the long-standing problem of 1/f noise in magnetoresistance (MR). The theory clarifies the main parameters affecting the modulation efficiency and proposes that the magnetic field strength along the sensitive direction of MR should be proportional to the displacement of the modulation structure to achieve a modulation efficiency of 100%. Experimental demonstration of the theory is done through the development of a new tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) accelerometer with a record-high modulation efficiency of 87%.

Nonvolatile Magnetoelectric Switching of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions with Dipole Interaction

Aitian Chen et al.

Summary: This study successfully demonstrates voltage-driven full resistance switching of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) with dipole interaction on a ferroelectric substrate through switchable parallel/antiparallel magnetization alignment. By rotating the magnetic easy axis via strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling, the parallel magnetizations in the MTJ reorient to the x axis with opposite paths because of dipole interaction, thus resulting in antiparallel alignment. Moreover, this voltage switching of MTJs is nonvolatile and can be well understood via phase field simulations. These results provide an avenue to realize electrical switching of MTJs and are significant for exploring energy-efficient spintronic devices.

Quantitative Evaluation for Magnetoelectric Sensor Systems in Biomagnetic Diagnostics

Eric Elzenheimer et al.

Summary: Dedicated research is being conducted on novel thin film magnetoelectric (ME) sensor concepts for medical applications. A quantitative evaluation of the sensor system and its output signals is necessary, along with a system consideration. The evaluation should be performed in reproducible measurement conditions, and an application-specific capacity (ASC) can be used as a figure of merit for a quantitative signal assessment. The approach can be applied to other magnetic sensors and applications.

Design of soft magnetic materials

Ananya Renuka Balakrishna et al.

Summary: A strategy for designing ferromagnetic materials with exceptionally low magnetic hysteresis is presented, based on a validated micromagnetic algorithm. The results suggest that cubic materials with large saturation magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy can have low coercivity by tuning the magnetostriction constants to specific values. This design strategy has broad potential application, particularly in magnetic materials for energy research.

Modeling and Parallel Operation of Exchange-Biased Delta-E Effect Magnetometers for Sensor Arrays

Benjamin Spetzler et al.

Summary: Delta-E effect magnetic field sensors based on exchange-biased magnetic multilayers have the potential to detect low-frequency and small-amplitude magnetic fields. Improving the detection limit by averaging the output of multiple sensor elements operated in parallel is possible, with certain conditions that need to be met for optimal results.

Magnetoelastic Coupling and Delta-E Effect in Magnetoelectric Torsion Mode Resonators

Benjamin Spetzler et al.

Summary: A study on magnetoelectric thin-film cantilevers as magnetic field sensors revealed different performances in sensitivity and frequency change between torsion modes and bending modes. The delta-E effect of certain stiffness tensor components was found to significantly increase the magnetic sensitivity, but excitation of torsion modes diminished the gain in sensitivity. Insights were gained for the design of high-sensitivity delta-E effect sensors and frequency tunable devices.

Phase Noise of SAW Delay Line Magnetic Field Sensors

Phillip Durdaut et al.

Summary: Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors are currently being studied for magnetic field detection, with shear horizontal surface acoustic waves, such as Love waves, significantly improving sensitivity. Understanding sensor-intrinsic noise sources and their impact is key, along with sensitivity and losses within the sensor. Increasing sensitivity does not further improve detection limits, rather reducing losses in the magnetic material is necessary.

Curvature and Stress Effects on the Performance of Contour-Mode Resonant ΔE Effect Magnetometers

Alexei D. Matyushov et al.

Summary: Miniaturized piezoelectric/magnetostrictive contour-mode resonators offer high spatial resolution, portability, low power consumption, and low cost, but a thorough understanding of the magnetic material behavior in these devices is lacking. This manuscript reports on a strong nonlinear correlation between the frequency response of the sensors and the stress-induced curvature of the resonator plate. The mechanical and magnetic properties are theoretically analyzed, and a record-high DC magnetic field sensitivity of 5 Hz nT(-1) is achieved by fabricating a magnetoelectric nanoplate resonator with low curvature.
