More frequent atmospheric rivers slow the seasonal recovery of Arctic sea ice

Pengfei Zhang et al.

Summary: The frequency of atmospheric rivers reaching the Arctic has increased in recent decades, which has slowed down the recovery of sea ice during the winter season. This is due to intensified precipitation and melting caused by the more frequent atmospheric rivers. Additionally, tropical Pacific variability also contributes to the observed changes in Arctic atmospheric rivers.

Global Application of the Atmospheric River Scale

Bin Guan et al.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are narrow corridors of enhanced water vapor transport that play important roles in the global water cycle. The AR scale helps evaluate and communicate the global influences of ARs, with AR event count inversely related to AR rank and peaking in midlatitude oceans. As precipitation intensity increases, ARs account for a larger fraction of precipitation occurrences.

How well does the IMERG satellite precipitation product capture the timing of precipitation events?

Runze Li et al.

Summary: Precipitation occurs in the form of discrete events, and the event characteristics significantly influence the hydrologic response. This study evaluates the precipitation event performance of the GPM IMERG product and finds that it generally overestimates event duration in summer and underestimates mean event precipitation intensity in winter. When IMERG successfully detects an event, there is an average temporal overlap of about 70% with the reference event.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers, tropical storms, and mesoscale convective systems play important roles in global precipitation, particularly in extreme precipitation events. Simulation data suggests that under global warming scenarios, the frequency and intensity of precipitation associated with these weather phenomena may change.

Review of GPM IMERG performance: A global perspective

Rajani K. Pradhan et al.

Summary: IMERG products show variation in performance across different geographical locations and climatic conditions, but overall they can appropriately estimate and detect regional precipitation patterns, with room for improvement particularly in mountainous areas and winter precipitation. Despite limitations in reproducing precipitation intensity, each new version of IMERG demonstrates substantial improvement across almost every spatiotemporal scale and climate condition.

An Overview of ARTMIP's Tier 2 Reanalysis Intercomparison: Uncertainty in the Detection of Atmospheric Rivers and Their Associated Precipitation

A. B. Marquardt Collow et al.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers play a crucial role in the hydrologic cycle by transporting water vapor poleward and causing precipitation, but their detection in large datasets still contains a lot of uncertainty. By comparing different algorithms and datasets, they found that the results of detection tools vary in different seasons and datasets.

Evaluation of IMERG and ERA5 precipitation products over the Mongolian Plateau

Ying Xin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of precipitation datasets over the Mongolian Plateau and found that they can broadly capture seasonal precipitation cycles and spatial patterns. However, there are still some deficiencies, such as overestimating weak precipitation and underestimating high-intensity precipitation. Among the datasets, ERA5-Land performed the best in describing daily precipitation. In addition, IMERG showed poor detection capabilities in forests due to topographic complexity.

Contribution of Atmospheric Rivers to Antarctic Precipitation

Michelle L. Maclennan et al.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers are efficient mechanisms that transport atmospheric moisture from low latitudes to the Antarctic Ice Sheet. They contribute substantially to Antarctic precipitation, particularly in East Antarctica. They play an important role in the year-to-year variability of Antarctic precipitation and are crucial for understanding present and future trends in Antarctic mass balance.

Intense atmospheric rivers can weaken ice shelf stability at the Antarctic Peninsula

Jonathan D. Wille et al.

Summary: This study uses an atmospheric river detection algorithm, regional climate model, and satellite observations to investigate the processes leading to the dramatic collapse of ice shelves in the Antarctic Peninsula. The research finds that intense atmospheric rivers have a 40% probability of inducing extremes in temperature, surface melt, sea-ice disintegration, or large swells that destabilize the ice shelves. This phenomenon was observed during the collapses of the Larsen A and B ice shelves. The study also reveals that 60% of calving events from 2000-2020 were triggered by atmospheric rivers, highlighting their significant role in ice shelf stability.

Precipitation characteristics related to atmospheric rivers in East Asia

Jinwon Kim et al.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers (ARs) play a critical role in shaping climate and extreme hydrologic events in mid-latitude coastal regions. This study in East Asia (EA) from 1979-2015 analyzed AR climatology, AR-precipitation characteristics, and regional variations. The study found that AR frequency varies seasonally with different characteristics in different regions, with the highest frequency in the coastal regions of the mid-latitude western North Pacific.

Jorge Eiras-Barca et al.

Summary: This study applies the newly-created atmospheric river intensity and impacts scale (AR Scale) to the European continent, finding remarkable variability in the distribution of AR events across Europe. AR1 and AR2 events are the most frequent, explaining most of the precipitation, but with a low probability of extreme rainfall, while AR3, AR4, and AR5 events, although less common, are associated with a high probability of extreme rainfall.

Atmospheric Rivers, Warm Air Intrusions, and Surface Radiation Balance in the Amundsen Sea Embayment

G. Djoumna et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that warm air intrusion events over the Amundsen Sea Embayment are mainly caused by large-scale moisture advection associated with atmospheric rivers. In 2013, there were twice as many warm air intrusion events compared to 2014, partially due to stronger pressure gradients in the study area. These events resulted in approximately 3 days of surface melting over areas like the Pine Island Glacier.

The Convective-To-Total Precipitation Ratio and the Drizzling Bias in Climate Models

Di Chen et al.

Summary: The overestimation of precipitation frequency and duration, coupled with the underestimation of intensity, known as the drizzling bias, is a long-standing issue in global climate models. By exploring this problem from the perspective of precipitation partitioning, it was found that high convective-to-total precipitation ratios in low latitudes contribute to the drizzling bias. Some CMIP6 models show reduced drizzling bias with decreased convective precipitation ratios, suggesting that more reasonable precipitation partitioning and finer model resolution could alleviate this bias.

Mechanisms of tropical precipitation biases in climate models

Hanjun Kim et al.

Summary: Through investigating the causes of inter-model spread in tropical zonal-mean precipitation pattern, it is found that the symmetric pattern is closely related to the seasonal amplitude of maximum precipitation position and is affected by clear-sky atmospheric shortwave absorption. The inter-model spread in net surface energy flux in the equatorial region, modulated by equatorial upwelling cooling, is the main factor associated with the inter-model spread in symmetric precipitation pattern.
