Fracture resistance of graphene origami under nanoindentation

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: Graphene has excellent physical properties, but its two-dimensional structure limits its application as reinforcing fillers in composites. In this study, an origami technique was used to improve the flexibility of graphene. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that graphene origami (GOri) can withstand higher loads and indentation depths than pristine graphene. The flexibility and strength of GOri can be further enhanced in the bilayer format. This study provides insights into the failure mechanisms and mechanical properties of GOri for graphene-based impact protection applications.

Oriented BN/Silicone rubber composite thermal interface materials with high out-of-plane thermal conductivity and flexibility

Qinghua Hu et al.

Summary: The study presents a method for preparing silicone rubber-based composites with high out-of-plane thermal conductivity and softness, with an out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 7.62 Wm(-1) K-1. Finite element simulation analysis indicates that the increase in thermal conductivity is attributed to the orientation of the BN flakes and the formation of the thermal network.

Toward the design of robust multilayer graphene: mechanistic understanding of the role played by interlayer interactions

Fatemeh Monji et al.

Summary: The study found that interlayer interactions and the number of layers have little effect on the stress-strain relations and Young's moduli of graphene samples under tensile stretch, but play a significant role in determining the force-displacement curves and Young's moduli during nanoindentation tests. Analysis of strain distributions revealed potential mechanisms behind these observations. The findings provide insights into the role of interlayer interactions and could inform the design of mechanically robust multilayer graphene.

Reduction of interfacial thermal transport of bilayer in-plane graphene/hexagonal boron nitride heterostructures via interlayer sp3 bonds, defects and stacking angle

Lei Fan et al.

Summary: Most studies on graphene/h-BN heterostructures focus on in-plane or single vertical structures, neglecting the interesting properties of combination. The interfacial thermal conductance of multiple-mixed heterostructures strongly depends on the type of covalent bond between interfaces rather than weak van der Waals force. The use of interlayer bonds, defects, and stacking angle in bi-layer heterostructures contributes to precisely tunable interfacial thermal conductance, aiding in the design of nanoscale devices.

Xing Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the transverse impact responses of three types of twisted bilayers subjected to nano-projectile penetrations at various velocities. Results show that the twist angle has little effect on the critical penetration velocity, with energy absorption primarily through kinetic energy transfer and deformation. As the number of layers increases, the absorption efficiency of bilayers is higher than that of individual monolayers.

The Impact of Interlayer Rotation on Thermal Transport Across Graphene/Hexagonal Boron Nitride van der Waals Heterostructure

Weijun Ren et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of interlayer rotation angle theta on interfacial thermal transport across graphene/h-BN heterostructure using molecular dynamics simulation. The thermal conductance at the interface decreases with increasing rotation angle, mainly due to the reduction in low-frequency phonon contribution. Rotation enhances surface fluctuation in the graphene layer, leading to a rotation angle-dependent thermal conductance.

An Integrated Approach to Design and Develop High-Performance Polymer-Composite Thermal Interface Material

Syed Sohail Akhtar

Summary: The computational framework utilizes novel differential effective medium approximation and mean-field homogenization to design high-performance filler-laden polymer thermal interface materials. The design strategy allows for handling non-dilute filler concentration and tailoring effective thermal conductivity by varying filler attributes within the constraints of the shear modulus. Potential polymers and fillers are considered, and high-density polyethylene and thermoplastic polyurethane with ceramic fillers exhibit high thermal conductivity without compromising compliance. The model validates that manipulating filler alignment and aspect ratio contributes significantly to heat-conducting networks in composites for ultra-high thermal conductivity.
