Layer-by-layer assembly of biomimetic fish scale structure on carbon fiber surfaces to improve thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of composites

Guipeng Quan et al.

Summary: Prompted by the properties of biomimetic fish scale hierarchy, the paper adopts the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly methodology to generate graphene oxide (GO), polyetheramine (PEA), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of carbon fibers (CFs), which results in a new interface phase. After two cycles of assembly, the thermal conductivity of the composite improves by 51.5%, and the interlayer shear strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus increase by 52.2%, 33.3%, and 60.1%, respectively. The study contributes to the production of biomimetic composites with high strength and excellent thermal conductivity.

Preparation of magnetic solvent-free carbon nanotube/Fe3O4 nanofluid sizing agent to enhance thermal conductivity and interfacial properties of carbon fiber composites

Jun Li et al.

Summary: A solvent-free MWCNTs @Fe3O4 nanofluid was used to modify the water-based epoxy sizing agent for CFRPs. The addition of 2% MFNF significantly improved the mechanical properties of CFRPs, with ILSS and bending strength increased by 21.69% and 39.51%, respectively. Moreover, the Thermal conductivity was improved by 112.23% due to the excellent TC possessed by MWCNTs and the orientation of MFNF in thermal conductivity, which facilitates phonon propagation at the interface.

Effects of multi-walled carbon nanotube/graphene oxide-based sizing on interfacial and tribological properties of continuous carbon fiber/poly (ether ether ketone) composites

Minlong Lai et al.

Summary: In this study, thermally stable and soluble s-PEEK was used as the basic sizing agent, with amino-functionalized MWCNTs and GO dispersed in it and deposited on the surface of CFs to improve the properties of composites. Highly loaded MWCNTs in the interfacial region were more effective, while a dilute GO-based complex sizing agent was beneficial for enhanced performance at a certain concentration.

Improving interfacial properties and thermal conductivity of carbon fiber/ epoxy composites via the solvent-free GO@Fe3O4 nanofluid modified water-based sizing agent

Chunxia Cheng et al.

Summary: A solvent-free GO@Fe3O4 nanofluid hybrid water-based sizing agent was prepared and applied to improve the interface properties and thermal conductivity of carbon fiber reinforced polymers. The GFNF CF/EP composites showed significantly enhanced performance compared to commercial CF/EP composites, with improvements in interfacial properties and thermal conductivity. The enhanced properties were attributed to the uniform adhesion of GFNF to the CF surface, promoting physical-chemical interaction, stress dispersion, and prevention of cracking, as well as the formation of continuous thermal conduction pathways at the interface.
