Pressure Effect on the Thermal Runaway Behaviors of Lithium-Ion Battery in Confined Space

Yawen Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a special test platform was designed to investigate the effect of low pressure on the thermal runaway characteristics of lithium-ion batteries. The results showed that with increasing pressure, the onset temperature, maximum temperature, and pressure of thermal runaway increased, while the voltage drop time was delayed. Moreover, it was found that thermal runaway was more likely to occur but with less hazard at lower pressure.

Effect of low temperature on thermal runaway and fire behaviors of 18650 lithium-ion battery: A comprehensive experimental study

Depeng Kong et al.

Summary: A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of operating temperature on the thermal runaway and combustion behavior of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The results showed that the onset temperature of thermal runaway decreased significantly with decreasing operating temperature. Low-temperature cycling led to earlier safety valve cracking and thermal runaway. This study provides detailed insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of thermal runaway behavior changes in LIBs at low temperatures, which can guide process safety assurance and fire protection design for battery applications in low-temperature environments.

Summary: Safety issues posed by thermal runaway are hindering the growth of lithium-ion batteries. A comprehensive model covering the entire process of venting during thermal runaway has been proposed. The model includes the prediction of particle ejection, which previous models have neglected. Experimental measurements were used to validate the model's accuracy. The results showed consistent particle and gas ejections, providing new references for the thermal safety design of battery packs.
