The effect of polychromatic nature of thermal neutrons on neutron radiography was investigated through experiments and simulations. An analytical procedure was established for beam hardening correction, and the corrected data values agreed well with the theoretical calculations, indicating the effectiveness of the correction method.
The effect of polychromatic nature of thermal neutrons on neutron radiography was studied through experiments and simulations on borated and non-borated stainless steel with homogeneous composition. The results were compared to theoretical neutron-transmission results obtained for a monochromatic neutron beam. The evolution of total cross sections, neutron-transmission and gray level in neutron radiography image indicate the important effect of beam hardening. For that, an analytical procedure has been established for thermal cross section determination and beam hardening correction of the experimental and simulated data. The corrected data values agree well with those calculated theoretically indicating the effectiveness of the developed correction method.
