Progress in deployment of biomass-based activated carbon in point-of-use filters for removal of emerging contaminants from water: A review

Emmanuel Menya et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current advances in the use of biomass-derived granular activated carbons (B-GACs) for point-of-use (POU) water purification, focusing on the removal of emerging contaminants (ECs). The study identifies nuts shells as the most investigated precursor material, and suggests the need to explore the use of soft, low-density biomass wastes for the production of B-GACs. Future research should also target the removal of specific ECs from water, regeneration options for B-GACs, removal of residual nanoparticles, lifecycle analysis, and costing of GAC-based POU filters.

Microalgal-induced remediation of wastewaters loaded with organic and inorganic pollutants: An overview

Imania Ghaffar et al.

Summary: The recent surge in industrialization has led to the accumulation of different types of pollutants in the environment due to illegal dumping of wastewater. Microalgae bioremediation has emerged as an eco-friendly technique to degrade organic compounds and convert them into non-toxic substances without producing secondary pollutants. Modification techniques such as immobilization and pigment-extraction have enhanced the bioremediation potential of microalgae. However, further research is needed to study the structural and functional responses of microalgae towards pollutant by-products, engineering microalgae to tolerate higher pollutant concentrations, reducing harvesting costs, and monitoring parameters at a large scale.

Sargassum macroalgae from Quintana Roo as raw material for the preparation of high-performance phosphate adsorbent from aqueous solutions

Carolina Hernandez-Navarro et al.

Summary: Currently, the large volumes of Sargassum biomass (Sgs) arriving on Caribbean coasts are a problem that must be solved quickly. One alternative is to obtain value-added products from Sgs. In this work, Sgs is demonstrated to be a high-performance Ca -bioadsorbent for phosphate removal by a heat pretreatment at 800 degrees C that produces biochar. The calcined Sgs (CSgs) have a composition of 43.68%, 40.51%, and 8.69% of Ca (OH)2, CaCO3, and CaO, making CSgs a promising material for phosphate removal and recovery.

Marckens Francoeur et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the optimal conditions for the preparation of magnetic activated carbons (mACs) from Sargassum sp. as adsorbents and catalytic supports. The mACs showed better adsorption capacity and degradation efficiency for antibiotics when prepared by the post-impregnation method compared to the pre-impregnation method. The physicochemical properties of the mACs were characterized using various techniques, and the use of Sargassum sp. was found to be promising for the removal of organic pollutants from polluted waters.
