ILAE classification and definition of epilepsy syndromes with onset in neonates and infants: Position statement by the ILAE Task Force on Nosology and Definitions

Sameer M. Zuberi et al.

Summary: This article proposes a classification and definition of epilepsy syndromes in neonates and infants, aiming to support epilepsy diagnosis and emphasize the importance of classifying epilepsy by syndrome and etiology. The article reports the epidemiology, clinical course, seizure types, EEG, neuroimaging, genetics, and differential diagnosis for each syndrome, and presents self-limited syndromes, developmental and epileptic encephalopathies, and etiology-specific epilepsy syndromes.

The severe epilepsy syndromes of infancy: A population-based study

Katherine B. Howell et al.

Summary: The study found that West syndrome and West syndrome-like epilepsy are the most common epilepsy syndromes among severe epilepsies of infancy, while the incidence of epilepsy of infancy and early infantile epileptic encephalopathy is lower. Most infants showed delayed or borderline development before the age of 2, with a small percentage of infants dying before the age of 2.

Confirming the contribution and genetic spectrum of de novo mutation in infantile spasms: Evidence from a Chinese cohort

Liying Liu et al.

Summary: This study determined the yield, genetic spectrum, and actual origin of de novo mutations (DNMs) in Chinese infantile spasms (IS) patients, with a focus on the efficacy of levetiracetam (LEV) for STXBP1-related IS. Somatic mutations accounted for a significant proportion of DNMs in IS cases, and treating patients with STXBP1-related IS with LEV showed improved clinical outcomes.

Safety of Early Discontinuation of Antiseizure Medication After Acute Symptomatic Neonatal Seizures

Hannah C. Glass et al.

Summary: In this comparative study, no significant difference was found in functional neurodevelopment or epilepsy risk at age 24 months among neonates whose ASM was discontinued vs maintained at hospital discharge after resolution of acute symptomatic seizures. These results suggest that discontinuation of ASM prior to hospital discharge may be suitable for most infants with acute symptomatic neonatal seizures.

Response to antiseizure medications in epileptic patients with malformation of cortical development

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment outcomes and predictors for seizure freedom in epileptic patients with MCD undergoing ASM regimens. The findings suggest that medical treatment can be successful in a minority of epileptic patients with MCD, and pretreatment seizure frequency is a predictor of treatment outcome. Additionally, sodium channel blockers monotherapy showed higher efficacy in achieving seizure freedom in the initial ASM regimen.
