Biopolymer-Based Hydrogels for Harvesting Water from Humid Air: A Review

Summary: Despite the increasing water demand caused by the growing global population and hydroclimatic factors, new sources of water must be identified and utilized. Biopolymer-based hydrogels have become a sustainable and inexpensive solution for capturing moisture from humid air. This review discusses recent advances in atmospheric water harvesting hydrogels based on cellulose, chitosan, and/or other biopolymers, and their applications in agriculture. Developing a cost-effective hydrogel-based water harvesting/supply system could help alleviate water stress in arid and semi-arid regions, where agriculture consumes a significant amount of water.

This review focuses on the latest advancements in MOFs-based absorbents for efficient solar-driven AWH, highlighting strategies to improve their water adsorption and photothermal properties. Different configurations of water harvesters are introduced, and future trends in solar-driven AWH are outlined.

Summary: The study found that Polypropylene doped with 1% fumed silica was the most effective at harvesting water, collecting almost 20 times more water than pure Polypropylene. This improvement is attributed to the decrease in surface tension when fumed silica is added. However, when fumed silica doping exceeds 1%, it increases the polymer's surface tension.
