Volcanic events coincide with plant dispersal across the Northern Andes

Maria Jose Sanin et al.

Summary: Biological dispersal is a key factor in speciation in the tropical Andes. Volcanic eruptions play a crucial role in creating topographic growth and facilitating species connectivity. A study on the wax palms genus reveals that volcanic eruption-induced topographic changes promoted species dispersal in the Northern Andes.

Geogenomics of montane palms points to Miocene-Pliocene Andean segmentation related to strike-slip tectonics

Maria Jose Sanin et al.

Summary: This study examines the genetic structure and variation of a palm species complex living in the cloud forests of the Colombian Andes. The results suggest that the genetic groups within the species complex reflect historical processes such as uplift-based isolation, dispersal events, and climate fluctuations. The presence of phylogeographic breaks coinciding with Pliocene strike-slip faulting events indicates the role of topographic disruption in the divergence of this species complex.

The Tracking of Moist Habitats Allowed Aiphanes (Arecaceae) to Cover the Elevation Gradient of the Northern Andes

Maria Jose Sanin et al.

Summary: The topographic gradients of the Tropical Andes may have triggered species divergence by different mechanisms. The study found that the distribution patterns of Aiphanes palm genus are related to geographic barriers and climatic heterogeneity. Different species occupy different geographic regions and adapt to different temperatures offered by the elevation gradient. This pattern suggests that moist environments with conserved adaptation to specific climatic conditions play an important role in species divergence.

Robustness and the generalist niche of polyploid species: Genome shock or gradual evolution?

Kentaro K. Shimizu

Summary: The prevalence of polyploidy in wild and crop species has sparked debates over its evolutionary advantages and disadvantages. Recent advancements in bioinformatics and empirical studies have allowed for a better understanding of the functional evolutionary study of polyploid species. Polyploid species can enhance their adaptability through inheriting parental stress responses and mutational robustness, and can even become generalists in nature. Identifying key genes responsible for gradual adaptive evolution will pave the way for synthetic biological approaches to transfer the advantages of polyploidy to other species.

Seed dispersal effectiveness by oilbirds (Steatornis caripensis) in the Southern Andes of Colombia

Sasha Cardenas et al.

Summary: Oilbirds show high effectiveness in seed dispersal, especially during non-breeding periods; they mainly disperse seeds to caves, dense forests, and mosaics of crops and forests, facilitating the dispersal and growth of plants; the unique ecosystem services provided by oilbirds highlight the importance of their conservation efforts.

Genomic and niche divergence in an Amazonian palm species complex

Christine D. Bacon et al.

Summary: By integrating data from morphological traits, target sequence capture, climate, soil, and reproductive biology, this study provides a continent-wide perspective of divergence patterns in Geonoina macrostachys. The research reveals independent evolution of leaf shape across geographical space and demonstrates scale-dependent habitat differentiation driven mostly by climate for two morphogroups. Contrary to previous evidence of reproductive isolation between sympatric forms in Peru and Ecuador, this study suggests that reproductive barriers in G. macrostachys have evolved multiple times across its geographical range.
