Cavitation bubble dynamics and microjet atomization near tissue-mimicking materials

A. B. Sieber et al.

Summary: Considerable interest has been devoted to the interactions between cavitation bubbles and tissue-mimicking materials in recent years, as they have promising applications in medicine and biomedical sciences. The fluid-structure interaction between cavitation bubbles and elastic surfaces triggers unique collapse dynamics, including bubble splitting and microjetting phenomena that can cause damage. This study investigates the effect of boundary elasticity and bubble-surface distance on the dynamics of cavitation bubbles and the velocity of microjets. High-speed imaging techniques are used to track the bubble dynamics, with a focus on the formation and evolution of microjets. The study provides evidence of the atomization of liquid microjets within the bubble, followed by the establishment of fully liquid microjets. Supersonic velocities of up to 2000 m/s are achieved by the atomized portion of the microjet, while fully developed liquid microjets travel at averaged speeds of up to 1000 m/s. A numerical model based on the boundary integral method shows remarkable agreement with experimental observations.

Evaluation of the effect of diameter of multi-walled carbon nanotube on the tensile strength using sonication-induced fragmentation

Yoshinobu Shimamura et al.

Summary: Ultrasonication is a simple method for cutting carbon nanotubes in suspension, resulting in shortened fragmented nanotubes. The length of the fragmented nanotubes approaches a critical aspect ratio determined by the tensile strength of the nanotube, solvent viscosity, and physical properties of the cavitation bubbles produced. This study evaluated the tensile strength of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with different diameters using sonication-induced fragmentation and confirmed a strong dependence on diameter.

Effect of microwave-assisted acidification on the microstructure of coal: XRD, 1H-NMR, and SEM studies

He Li et al.

Summary: Microwave heating can facilitate coal fracturing and gas desorption, but it has issues such as low penetration depth, local overheating, and fracture closure. Acid treatment of coal has advantages in unblocking and permeability improvement, but it struggles to enter microcracks. Microwave-assisted acidification may provide an alternative solution.

Quantifying the impacts of coal mining activities on topsoil using Hg stable isotope: A case study of Guqiao mining area, Huainan City

Jie Hu et al.

Summary: The release of mercury from coal mining activities poses risks to soil ecosystems and human health. Understanding the accumulation characteristics of mercury in coal mining soil is important for controlling mercury emissions and developing prevention and control measures. The study found that mercury in coal exists mainly in inorganic form and undergoes photoreduction before being incorporated into coal. The isotopic composition of mercury differed significantly among different soil types, with farmland soil showing negative excursions compared to coal mining soil. The accumulation of mercury in farmland soil primarily comes from background soil.

Experimental investigation on coal desorption characteristics and spontaneous combustion properties evolution under the coupled effect of temperature and pressure

Shuaikui Li et al.

Summary: The coupling effects of temperature and pressure affect the gas desorption patterns and microscopic pore structure morphology in coal, and also have an influence on the spontaneous combustion (SC) characteristics of coal. Through experimental tests, it was found that the pore volume and specific surface area of coal decrease with increasing temperature and pressure, while the percentage of micropores and mesopores, which promote the oxygen reaction of coal, increases. The research results can provide guidance for the prevention and control of fire hazards in mines with high gas-prone SC.

Effect of microwave radiation on mechanical behaviors of tight fine sandstone subjected to true triaxial stress

Jun Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior of sandstone under different microwave irradiation conditions through true triaxial tests. The results demonstrate that the strength of irradiated sandstone first increases and then decreases. The peak brittleness of the sandstone increases with an increase in stress. The stress difference induced by water vapor expansion and mineral thermal expansion is the main factor for microwave breaking water-bearing sandstone.

Summary: The temperature curves of coal samples under liquid nitrogen soaking can be divided into accelerated cooling stage, decelerated cooling stage, and maintained low-temperature stage. With an increase in soaking times, the time required to reach the low-temperature stage gradually shortens. The heating/cooling speed follows a logarithmic function, and the order of absolute values is lignite > bituminite > anthracite.
