Iron-modified phosphorus- and silicon-based biochars exhibited various influences on arsenic, cadmium, and lead accumulation in rice and enzyme activities in a paddy soil

Xing Yang et al.

Summary: The use of functionalized biochar amendments can reduce the accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in rice grains. Specifically, silicon (Si)-rich and phosphorus (P)-rich biochars can decrease the concentration of arsenic (As) in rice grains, while iron-modified biochars can enhance rice grain yield. Additionally, P-rich biochar can increase the activity of beneficial bacteria in the soil and decrease lead (Pb) concentration in rice grains. However, iron-modified P-rich biochar can increase cadmium (Cd) and Pb concentration in rice grains.

Arsenic removal and stabilization behavior of schwertmannite@BC (Sch@BC) in contaminated dual media (water/soil): Via sulfate exchange and chemical complexation

Xiao Tan et al.

Summary: A composite material, Schwertmannite-modified biochar (Sch@BC), demonstrated high efficiency in remediating arsenic-contaminated water and soil. The characterization results showed successful loading of Schwertmannite particles on biochar, increasing active sites for arsenic adsorption. Sch@BC exhibited improved adsorption capacity compared to pristine biochar, with stable performance over a wide pH range. The mechanism of adsorption was found to be electrostatic interaction and ion exchange, forming a FeAsO4 complex and removing arsenic. The stabilization effect of Sch@BC was further confirmed in a soil incubation experiment, where the proportion of stable crystalline Fe/Mn-bound fractionation increased. Additionally, Sch@BC promoted the growth of As-resistant microorganisms and improved the stability of arsenic in soil, making it a promising agent for arsenic remediation.

Soil pH determines arsenic-related functional gene and bacterial diversity in natural forests on the Taibai Mountain

Qi Bei et al.

Summary: In the natural forest soils of Taibai Mountain, soil pH is the key factor determining the distribution and abundance of microorganisms, and the arsenic content and pH of the soil determine the distribution of arsenic-metabolizing microorganisms. Arsenic-related functional genes are ubiquitous in forest soils, with the arsB gene having the highest relative abundance, followed by arsC, aoxB, arrA, arsM, and arxA genes. The distribution of arsenic-related functional genes is decoupled from the corresponding bacterial community. Soil pH, organic matter, and altitude jointly determine the diversity of arsenic-related functional genes in the two slopes of Taibai Mountain, with soil pH being a key factor.

Silkworm excrement reduces cadmium and arsenic accumulation in rice grains by altering soil chemical properties, microbial community, and promoting iron plaque formation

Tingting Li et al.

Summary: The addition of silkworm excrement (SE) to soil can reduce the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in rice grains. This is achieved by increasing soil pH, electrical conductivity, and organic matter content (for Cd) and increasing the abundance of microorganisms involved in As methylation (for Cd and As). Overall, this study provides a new approach to improve the utilization of agricultural waste resources and ensure the safety of food production.

Biochar performance for preventing cadmium and arsenic accumulation, and the health risks associated with mustard (Brassica juncea) grown in co-contaminated soils

Yili Zang et al.

Summary: This study found that biochar derived from waste can reduce the contents of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in contaminated soil, and therefore reduce the potential harm to human health through the food chain. Among the different types of biochar tested, biochar made from sugar refinery sludge (SSB) was the most effective, with Cd and As contents in mustard shoots decreased by 45-49% and 19-37%, respectively. Furthermore, biochar also altered the microbial community composition, increasing the abundance of proteobacteria, which helped immobilize Cd and As in the soil and reduce the risks to humans. Therefore, promoting the use of SSB-derived biochar is a promising approach for safe vegetable production in co-contaminated soils.

Effects of different heavy metal pollution levels on microbial community structure and risk assessment in Zn-Pb mining soils

Ruiqi Yang et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination in soils at a Zn-Pb mineral processing plant in Longnan, China poses a serious threat to human health and global pollution. Different levels of heavy metal contamination have varying effects on microbial communities. Statistical analysis revealed higher average levels of all detected metals (Zn, Pb, As, Cu, Cd, Hg) in the soil compared to the background value, with Pb and As being the most serious contaminants. The heaviest contamination occurred in the raw material stacking area and production area. Closer proximity to the wastewater discharge area corresponded to higher heavy metal content and greater pollution. Microbial community diversity decreased with increasing heavy metal concentrations, but fungi showed no significant change. Cu, Cd, Hg, and pH were identified as the main factors affecting microbial community composition. Actinobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes were negatively correlated with Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb at the uncontaminated level, while Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi were significantly correlated with pH and Hg at the severely contaminated level. However, heavy metal contamination had minimal impact on dominant fungi. In conclusion, microbial communities such as Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Ascomycota exhibited greater tolerance to heavy metals, providing important insights for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Summary: In this study, a novel remediation technique combining electrokinetics (EK) with permeable reactive barriers (PRB) was used to remediate arsenic-contaminated soils. The results showed that the PRB of Fe/Mn/C-LDH placed in the middle was a feasible option, and a higher electric field strength of 2 V/cm resulted in optimal arsenic removal. The soil moisture content had little effect on arsenic removal, while a moisture content of 35% was found to be the most effective for leaching toxicity removal.

Cross-redox and simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and As(III): Influences of Fe(II), Fe(III), oxalic acid, and dissolved organic carbon

Kim Hoong Ng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interference of ubiquitous substances on the co-removal of hexavalent chromium and arsenite. The results showed that the addition of Fe(II) promoted the reduction of Cr(VI) and suppressed the oxidation of As(III). Neutralizing the solution to pH 6.0 allowed for the complete removal of reduced Cr through Fe(II)-assisted adsorption and/or co-precipitation, while the removal of aqueous As was less effective. Fe(III) triggered high adsorptive and/or co-precipitative removals of both Cr and As. Organically-altered systems exhibited a decrease in As(III) oxidation, with oxalic acid competing with As(III) in redox interactions and DOC reducing As(V) into As(III). DOC also affected the precipitation of Cr and As through complexation and/or blocking adsorption or co-precipitation sites. This study unraveled the interference from ubiquitous species in the co-removal of Cr(VI) and As(III), providing insights for heavy metal contaminant remediation.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature of biochar on Cd, Pb and As bioavailability and bacterial community composition in contaminated paddy soil

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the bioavailability of Cd, Pb, and As in contaminated paddy soil, as well as the bacterial community structure. The results showed that biochar decreased the bioavailability of Cd and Pb, with wood sawdust biochar performing better than peanut shell biochar. The pyrolysis temperature had no significant effect on Cd bioavailability, but higher temperatures resulted in decreased Pb bioavailability. The feedstock played a more important role in altering bacterial diversity and community composition than pyrolysis temperature. The addition of peanut shell biochar increased the diversity of soil bacteria through elevating soil dissolved carbon. Overall, biochar can be an effective tool in reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soil.
