Preparation and characterization of inclusion complex of Myristica fragrans Houtt. (nutmeg) essential oil with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin

Xiaohui Xi et al.

Summary: This study prepared the inclusion complex (IC) of nutmeg essential oil (NEO) with 2-hydroxypropyl ss-cyclodextrin (HP-ss-CD) by the coprecipitation method, overcoming the poor stability and low aqueous solubility of NEO in food. The optimal conditions were an inclusion temperature of 36 degrees C, time of 247 min, stirring speed of 520 r/min, and wall-core ratio of 12:1, resulting in a recovery of 80.63%. The formation of IC was confirmed by various techniques, and it was found that encapsulation improved the thermal stability, antioxidant, and nitrite scavenging activities of NEO. Moreover, the release of NEO from IC can be controlled by regulating the temperature and relative humidity. Overall, NEO/HP-ss-CD IC has great potential for application in the food industry.

Encapsulating quercetin in cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks improved its solubility and bioavailability

Zhenjiong Wang et al.

Summary: Quercetin-loaded gamma-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (Que-CD-MOFs) have significantly enhanced solubility and free radical scavenging ability. Que-CD-MOFs exhibit reduced cytotoxicity to HK-2 cells and maintained inhibition on HT-29 tumor cells, with a preferential location of Que molecules inside the cavities of gamma-cyclodextrin pairs in gamma-CD-MOFs.

Inclusion complexation of emodin with various β-cyclodextrin derivatives: Preparation, characterization, molecular docking, and anticancer activity

Amy Oo et al.

Summary: Encapsulation with beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) has been explored to enhance the solubility of emodin (ED) for pharmaceutical applications. In this study, inclusion complexation of ED with β-CD and its derivatives was performed to identify the most promising drug carrier. The ED/DM-β-CD complex showed the highest stability and water solubility, followed by ED/SBE7-β-CD and ED/HP-β-CD complexes. The SEM micrographs and DSC thermograms confirmed the inclusion complex formation, and molecular docking suggested C-form insertion as the preferred binding mode. Moreover, the inclusion complexes, especially ED/DM-β-CD, showed significantly higher anti-proliferative effects on cancer cell lines compared to ED alone.

Cross-Linked Poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-phloretin) Microspheres and Their Application for Controlled Drug Delivery

Sahid Mehmood et al.

Summary: In this study, cross-linked poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-phloretin) microspheres were successfully synthesized and characterized. The size of the microspheres depended on the HCCP:Pht mole ratio, and the microspheres exhibited good crystalline nature and thermal stability. Dynamic light scattering showed that the size of the microspheres increased with decreased HCCP:Pht mole ratio. Furthermore, the microspheres demonstrated good drug loading capability and controlled release property for the model drug camptothecin.
